LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Opera's 2013-14 season will include the company premiere of Philip Glass' "Einstein on the Beach" and a revival of Britten's "Billy Budd" as part of celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth.
The LA Opera said Tuesday that "Einstein" will open Oct. 11, with dances by Lucinda Childs in the 1976 Robert Wilson production.
Britten's "Billy Budd," part of "Britten 100/LA: A Celebration," will open Feb. 22, 2014. The Francesco Zambello production from London's Royal Opera was first seen in Los Angeles in 2000. Liam Bonner makes his role debut as Billy, with Richard Croft as Captain Vere and Greer Grimsley as John Claggert in his company debut.
Britten was born Nov. 22, 1913.
General director Placido Domingo will conduct the opening night performance of Bizet's "Carmen" on Sept. 21. Patricia Bardon sings the title role, with Brandon Jovanovich as Don Jose and Dwayne Croft as Escamillo.
There will be a new production of Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" starring Albina Shagimuratova and opening March 15, 2014, with the director still to be decided.
The season includes revivals of Verdi's "Falstaff" with Roberto Frontali (opening Nov. 9), Mozart's "Die Zauberfloete (The Magic Flute)" (Nov. 23), and Massenet's "Thais," which features Domingo in the baritone role of Athanael (May 17, 2014).
Music director James Conlon will lead four productions at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and the world premiere of Alexander Prior's community opera "Jonah and the Whale" at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on March 21, 2014.
