Crashes raise concerns at Winter X Games

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) ? The image was chilling: Snowmobile rider Caleb Moore, launched over his handlebars on a backflip gone wrong, rolled down the landing hill with his 450-pound machine somersaulting behind him.

Run over by his sled, Moore lay on the snow for several minutes before being helped off the course. As of Wednesday, he was hospitalized in critical condition because of bleeding around his heart and a complication involving his brain.

Moore's was the worst accident at the Winter X Games, which wrapped up Sunday night after four days of competition, but it wasn't the only harrowing moment. The wipeouts included a runaway snowmobile that sent spectators scrambling.

Even the highlights were hardly tame. Snowboarding star Shaun White soared a competition record 24 feet into the air during the superpipe competition, and fellow boarder Elena Hight showed off a difficult trick called a "double alley-oop backside rodeo" that involved a couple of backflips and a 180-degree rotation. It had never been seen in a competition.

All that, plus Moore's crash, has some wondering whether dialing up the difficulty each year improves action sports or has simply made them too dangerous.

"Should we be asking these questions? We absolutely should be," said Dan Lebowitz, the executive director of Sport in Society at Northeastern University, which examines the role of sports to promote healthy development and social responsibility.

The people performing these superhuman feats "really are just human," he said. "How do we maintain safety in that progression when that progression sometimes pushes every envelope to some amazingly extreme point?"

Moore's injuries underscore the dangers at Winter X, which was filled with numerous cover-your-eyes crashes.

Halldor Helgason of Iceland over-rotated on a flip in the snowboard big air competition and had to be taken off on a sled with a concussion. Rose Battersby of New Zealand sustained a lumbar spine fracture in a wipeout during practice before the skiing slopestyle competition, which will be an Olympic sport next winter at the Sochi Games.

Then there was this: Summer X Games motocross champion turned snowmobile newcomer Jackson Strong tumbled off his machine during the best trick competition, the throttle sticking and the sled swerving toward fans as they scurried away. The machine came to a rest when it got tangled in some netting and no one was seriously hurt.

Such a scenario had already crossed the mind of Levi LaVallee, a snowmobiler who captured two gold medals only to be sidelined for the final two competitions after tearing a muscle in his back.

"I've always thought about, 'What happens if the thing tips over and the throttle sticks?'" LaVallee said. "It was good, though, because it showed that X Games has a good setup with the fencing."

Whether action sports are too dangerous is an issue that's been raised before.

When freestyle skier Sarah Burke died in a training accident a little more than a year ago in Park City, Utah, there were questions about the halfpipe. Before that, the sport was examined when snowboarder Kevin Pearce suffered a severe brain injury in a fall in the same pipe as Burke two years earlier. Pearce has recovered and served as an analyst at Winter X.

But in general, the athletes accept the risks and defend their disciplines.

"To lose Sarah was such a blow to this entire industry," said snowboarder Gretchen Bleiler, who didn't compete this year as she recovers from a serious eye injury she suffered in training. "This sport brings so much joy, happiness and balance to my life and that far outweighs what could happen. You can't ever live your life with what could happen."

In a statement, X Games officials said they've paid close attention to safety issues over the event's 18-year history: "We've worked closely with athletes, risk management specialists, sport organizers and event managers to present the best possible experience for athletes and spectators. Further measures are constantly being evaluated."

Athletes say they prepare as best they can by trying out new tricks into foam pits and air bags set up at the bottom of courses. But even all the caution in the world can't prevent the fact that sometimes well-practiced maneuvers can go wrong in the air.

"You don't want to live your life in fear because of a situation," LaVallee said. "Look, I'm driving down the road right now and the worst-case scenario is a car could swerve over into my lane and run over me ? there it is, end of the road.

"That's kind of the same thing we think when we're competing. Hopefully, the preparation and countless hours of training and practicing will prevent the worst-case scenario from happening."

Tucker Hibbert ? the Shaun White of snowmobiling after winning his sixth straight SnoCross title ? just hopes casual fans understand that what they see on television is not true snowmobiling.

"You're seeing the most extreme side of what we do," Hibbert said. "That's a lot different than what the average person does on a snowmobile."

Hibbert doesn't participate in events such as best trick because, "I just wasn't born with those skills. I sit back and watch those guys, enjoy what they do."

He paused.

"You just hate to see anyone crash, anyone get hurt," Hibbert said.

Moore was in the middle of an impressive run in the freestyle event when he caught the top of the hill that was serving as a landing area. He initially walked away with help and went to a hospital with a concussion.

Moore later developed bleeding around his heart and had surgery. His family said that Moore, of Krum, Texas, also had a complication involving his brain.

Colten Moore, Caleb's younger brother and defending champion in the event, separated his pelvis in a crash later that same night.

LaVallee is no stranger to horrific wipeouts.

While training for the "Red Bull: New Year. No Limits" daredevil series two years ago in Southern California, LaVallee lost control of his snowmobile high in the air and landed violently on his side, bouncing down the landing ramp. He broke ribs, cracked his pelvis, collapsed one lung and punctured the other.

But he returned the next year and jumped a record 412 feet, 6 inches.

"We're passionate about the sport that we're in," LaVallee said.

"Anyone who competes has that drive to succeed, to go bigger than the next person or be the first one to do it."

The mentality is similar throughout action sports, even if the bar keeps getting raised.

"There are going to be benchmarks set and people trying to exceed that benchmark," Lebowitz said. "That's just the essence of our society and our social culture."

Big changes for LEED certification - Real Estate Weekly

Home ? Green Building

10:26 am, January 30, 2013

Changes to LEED certification will change the way project teams think, integrate, plan, execute and operate their buildings, according to experts.

At a workshop hosted by CoreNet Global NYC providing an overview of the upcoming changes to LEED v4, the U.S. Green Building Council?s Melissa Gallagher-Rogers said the changes will have ?the biggest impact on CO2 emissions of any version of the rating systems and take an unprecedented stand on human health.?

Gallagher-Rogers added that the USGBC is looking for pilot projects for the new system, and those participating will receive hands-on support to help them earn project certification.

Tiffany Broyles Yost, director of programs at the Urban Green Council, said her organization supports and interacts with the New York City real estate market and its professionals. She also discussed the impact LEED v4 will have on the urban environment and reviewed the ?Greener, Greater Buildings Plan,? highlighting what its changes mean for real estate professionals and tenants throughout New York City.

The Related Companies? sustainability manager, Luke Falk, offered a developer?s perspective, discussing the potential benefits and challenges of the changes.

Falk shared how the LEED rating system has better enabled Related to invest in higher quality buildings.

Surprisingly, Facebook?s News Feed Ads Aren?t Scaring Away Users

Facebook Mobile Ad ExampleFacebook risked driving users away by showing more ads in the news feed last year, but to Mark Zuckerberg's surprise, a big increase in their presence during 2012 only reduced Likes and comments by 2%. Users are staying loyal, which during the 2012 Q4 earnings call Zuckerberg called a sign of the value Facebook provides.

The need to feed programs Campylobacter's 'Sat Nav'

Jan. 29, 2013 ? A rumbling tummy is our body's way of telling us "it's time for lunch." Likewise, bacteria need to know when it's time to eat.

Researchers at the Institute of Food Research on the Norwich Research Park have uncovered how the food-borne bacterial pathogen Campylobacter jejuni can change its swimming behaviour to find a location with more food.

Campylobacter is the most common cause of bacterial food-borne illness in the UK, with more than 371,000 cases annually. When people get infected, the bacteria need to find their way from the source of contamination, most often undercooked poultry, to the cells lining the gut, passing through thick layers of mucus. In these different locations, Campylobacter must find enough food to sustain itself as well as a suitable environment to carry out respiration, the process of generating energy.

Using a newly developed assay, the researchers found that Campylobacter balances the directions given by two different systems to either seek out more nutritious locations, or to find places where respiration is most efficient. Genetic tools were used to show that the system controlling swimming towards food overrides the other system, suggesting that the "need to feed" is the foremost concern for Campylobacter.

Unlike other food poisoning bugs, such as E. coli or Salmonella, Campylobacter has a whole range of systems that can detect different chemicals in the environment, and alter swimming behaviour accordingly: the 'Sat Nav' of the bacterial world.

The work is published in the journal PLOS ONE. Dr Mark Reuter, the lead author says "we know that Campylobacter can swim, and that this is very important for causing disease, but aimless swimming isn't efficient. The bugs need to know where they want to go."

Discovering how these 'Sat Nav' systems help target the bugs to the site of infection may help prevent future disease, and may be relevant to other food-borne and gut-associated pathogens.

The Institute of Food Research, which is strategically funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, has a research team dedicated to studying Campylobacter. They are looking at what makes Campylobacter such a successful pathogen and to find weaknesses in its biology that could lead to new ways of controlling it.

Beware sophisticated Twitter phishing scams

As most ZDNet readers know, phishing scammers find ways to forge emails from legitimate?sites, hoping to get your personal details such as name, social security number, password, and so on. These forged emails often appear to come from financial institutions, so the scammer can access your bank account.

The latest variant of this scam uses a hijacked?twitter account to send out direct messages that appear completely legitimate. Then message contains a link that sends the recipient to a Twitter login page, which again appears absolutely real. However, in this case, that login page is actually hosted by identity thieves and not by the real Twitter company. In other words, it's a fake Twitter site.

Here is an image of a fake direct message I received this morning (the sender's identifying information is blurred):

Twitter phishing email DM

?When you click the link, it takes you to this page, which looks completely legitimate to the casual observer:

twitter phishing login

Although this page looks and feels entirely legit, although it is not. If you enter your Twitter username and password into this site, you will become a victim of identity theft; the thieves will then control your Twitter account.

Protect yourself

You can take steps to help avoid falling prey to this kind of scam:

1. Do not clicks within emails. If you don't click a link, then you can't get caught in the phishing web.

2. Look closely at any web address that asks you to enter personal information.

In this case, the page looks real but there are subtle signs of forgery. Here is a larger view of the page address:

Twitter phishing address

Although the site looks and feels like the official Twitter page, in fact it is not Twitter at all?? look closely and you can see the spelling is not "Twitter" but "iwltter." The thieves cunningly chose a sequence of letters designed to mimic Twitter at first glance.

3. Consider the context of the message.?Suspect any message that does seem right. In this case, I hardly know the sender so the message immediately looked out of context and suspicious to me.?

4. Be especially careful on tablets and phones because the fake address may be almost illegible on the small screen of a mobile device. If you aren't absolutely certain of the source, then don't click the link. If necessary, go to a desktop computer where you can more easily see details of the address.

Phishing is a growing problem that you must take seriously. The scammers have become more sophisticated in mimicking?legitimate sites, so give those links an extra level of scrutiny before you click.

WPS Health Insurance laying off 450 - WQOW TV: Eau Claire, WI ...

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - WPS Health Insurance has notified the state it will begin laying off about 450 employees at the end of March.

The layoffs are mainly because the company lost two major federal contracts. 250 people in Monona and Madison and 201 people in Wausau are affected. The Monona-based nonprofit health insurer anticipates additional layoffs if it doesn't find new business to replace the federal contracts.

WPS CEO Mike Hamerlik to the State Journal (http://bit.ly/14rgIKI ) last November that up to 600 employees could lose their jobs in 2013. The company lost contracts to process Medicare claims as well as manage care claims for the military in 21 states.

The contracts made up about 40% of the company's annual revenue last year.

Bodies of kidnapped Mexican band members found in well

MONTERREY (Reuters) - Police found a dozen bodies inside a well in northern Mexico, some of them members of a band abducted last week by an armed group, a spokesman for the state of Nuevo Leon, Jorge Domene, said on Monday.

Authorities have identified four of the bodies, including that of a Colombian national. All were wearing jeans and T-shirts with the logo of the music group - "Poderoso Kombo Kolombia."

One band member who managed to escape told police that after he and the others were kidnapped, their armed men captors asked them if they belonged to an organized crime gang. They were shot when they refused to answer.

It was not clear how the surviving band member escaped or whether he was wounded. Domene said he had fled Mexico after reporting the attack.

A total of 18 men, 12 musicians plus staff, were abducted on Thursday at a party in a bar near the industrial city of Monterrey, Domene said.

"Presumably there could be more bodies so we will extend the search as far as conditions allow it," he told a press conference.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has vowed to reduce criminal violence that spiraled after his predecessor, Felipe Calderon, launched an assault on drug cartels in December 2006. Some 70,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since then.

Driver fatally shot aboard Alabama school bus

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) ? An unidentified man boarded a school bus, shot the driver several times, then escaped with a 6-year-old passenger, prompting an hourslong standoff with police that remained unresolved early Wednesday.

The Dale County Sheriff told WBMA-TV (http://bit.ly/WthpQh ) that the man shot the driver in Midland City on Tuesday after he refused to let the child off the bus. The driver later died of his wounds. His identity wasn't released.

The shooter took the child to an area behind a nearby church, and police were negotiating with him, authorities said.

Midland City police would not comment, and a call to the Dale City Sheriff's office was not answered Tuesday.

Authorities from multiple agencies were on the scene and nearby residents were evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure, said Rachel David, a spokeswoman for the police department in the nearby town of Dothan.

"Authorities also confirmed the presence of a child at the scene but are giving no further information at this time," David said in a news release late Tuesday.

'Moral realism' may lead to better moral behavior

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Getting people to think about morality as a matter of objective facts rather than subjective preferences may lead to improved moral behavior, Boston College researchers report in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology.

In two experiments, one conducted in-person and the other online, participants were primed to consider a belief in either moral realism (the notion that morals are like facts) or moral antirealism (the belief that morals reflect people's preferences) during a solicitation for a charitable donation. In both experiments, those primed with moral realism pledged to give more money to the charity than those primed with antirealism or those not primed at all.

"There is significant debate about whether morals are processed more like objective facts, like mathematical truths, or more like subjective preferences similar to whether vanilla or chocolate tastes better," said lead researcher Liane Young, assistant professor of psychology at Boston College. "We wanted to explore the impact of these different meta-ethical views on actual behavior."

Ideas have previously been advanced on the subject, but Young and her former research assistant A.J. Durwin, now a law student at Hofstra University, are the first to directly investigate the question.

In one experiment, a street canvasser attempted to solicit donations from passersby for a charity that aids impoverished children. Participants in one set were asked a leading question to prime a belief in moral realism: "Do you agree that some things are just morally right or wrong, good or bad, wherever you happen to be from in the world?" Those in a second set were asked a question to prime belief in moral antirealism: "Do you agree that our morals and values are shaped by our culture and upbringing, so there are no absolute right answers to any moral questions?" Participants in a control set were not asked any priming question.

In this experiment, participants primed with realism were twice as likely to be donors, compared to those primed with antirealism or not primed at all.

A second experiment, conducted online, yielded similar results. Participants asked to donate money to a charity of their choice who were primed with realism reported being willing to give more than those primed with antirealism or not primed at all.

"Priming participants to consider the notion that morals are like facts increased decisions to donate in both experiments, revealing the potential impact of meta-ethical views on everyday decision-making," said Young. "Simply asking participants to consider moral values, as we did with the antirealism prime, did not produce an effect," she said, "so priming morality in general may not necessarily lead to better behavior. Considering the existence of non-negotiable moral facts may have raised the stakes and motivated participants to behave better."

Since "real" moral stakes may be accompanied by "real" consequences -- whether good (e.g., helping others, enhanced self-esteem) or bad (e.g., retribution), priming a belief in moral realism may in fact prompt people to behave better, in line with their existing moral beliefs, the researchers say.

The researchers note that priming a belief in moral realism may enhance moral behavior under certain conditions -- such as when the right thing to do is relatively unambiguous (e.g., it is good to be generous). A different outcome could be possible when subjects are faced with more controversial moral issues, they say.

Liane Young's research frequently focuses on the psychology and neuroscience of moral judgment and behavior. In 2012, she was awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and was named a Dana Neuroscience Scholar by the Dana Foundation, which also awarded her a three-year grant to support her study of brain activity and moral decision-making in individuals with autism, a project that will provide a valuable research opportunity for BC undergraduates. In addition, she received the 2011 Early Career Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Social Neuroscience from the Society for Social Neuroscience, among other honors.

Her research on attributions of responsibility to groups (e.g., corporations) versus members of groups was published in the journal Psychological Science in 2012; she is also co-author of a study of moral judgments in adults with autism that was reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Boko Haram commander declares Nigeria cease-fire

A leader of the Islamist group Boko Haram announced a cease-fire, raising questions that the group may be split over whether to make peace.?

A purported commander of Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram declared a unilateral cease-fire on Monday, raising fresh questions about possible rifts within the secretive militant movement as it was not clear if he was speaking for the group.

Sheik Abu Mohammed Ibn Abdulazeez, a man local security sources say is a sect member, twice made statements last year saying Boko Haram is ready for peace talks with the government.

But the group, whose attacks have left hundreds dead since it launched an uprising to try to carve an Islamic state out of Nigeria in 2009, has continued its insurgency unabated. The latest statement is likely to be greeted with scepticism.

In the remarks in English sent to journalists in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, Boko Haram's headquarters, Abdulazeez said Boko Haram had declared "a ceasefire throughout the country with immediate effect ... following a series of meetings with government officials."

It added that he had "the consent and approval of our leader Abubakar Shekau and I call on all members to stop hostilities."

It is unclear if Abdulazeez really is speaking on behalf of Shekau ? who has not come out to confirm or denounce him ? or whether he represents a rival faction of the Islamist movement seen as the main security threat to Africa's top oil exporter.

The statement came through the usual channels Boko Haram have used to deliver messages; through the Borno state journalists' union. It was signed by Abdulazeez who also called to confirm it, union members said.

Shekau denied claims by the government that behind-the-scenes peace talks were being held in October last year, but he has remained silent since Abdulazeez made contact with press in November.

The timing of the alleged cease-fire is likely to be seen as odd given Nigeria's involvement in military efforts to dislodge Islamists in neighbouring Mali, with whom Boko Haram are known to have links. Nigeria's participation in Mali was expected to provoke a violent backlash from Boko Haram.

"We have adopted this measure as a result of the hardship women and children are subjected to, and I urge all members to abide by this directive," Abdulazeez's statement said.

"I urge law enforcement agencies to reciprocate this good gesture," it added.

There was no immediate comment from Nigerian security forces.

Northern Nigeria's conflict has killed around 3,000 people since late 2009, according to Human Rights Watch.

Even if Abdulazeez does not represent Shekau, his statement could add to evidence that military pressure has fragmented Boko Haram, which is now believed to consist of various splinter groups more or less extreme than Shekau's main faction, including ones who have trained with Al Qaeda's Saharan wing.

Gunmen killed 23 people in northern Nigeria in attacks that appeared to target gamblers and people selling "forbidden" meat that Islamist militants disapprove of.

On Sunday, gunmen killed eight in Borno state, an attack that could have been carried out by Islamists or criminal gangs taking advantage of growing lawlessness.

Abdulazeez's statement said any attacks from now on would be the work of "armed robbers and other criminals."

Richard Vanderhurst ? Words Of Wisdom For Article Marketing

Who do you blame when your article marketing attempt falls through? Preparation is key to meeting upcoming challenges. Continue reading to discover some excellent tips you can utilize in your article marketing plan.

If your articles are well written and informative, potential buyers will regard you as an authority in your field. This leads to more people valuing the information that you provide and more orders. Good researched information will also make people want to refer family and friends to the information you provide.

Give your article a compelling headline, and it is likely to be read by more people. A well-written title causes a reader to seek more information and delve deeper into the content. By generating their initial interest in your article and the information it contains, you will be more likely to have them read it all the way to the end.

Carving out a niche for yourself is key to your success at article marketing. By working in an area that hasn?t already been inundated with other article marketers, you will find that you are more successful. That way, you will become involved on the ground floor of the industry.

Keep customer satisfaction at the top of your priority list when article marketing. This might mean writing articles to cover new subjects they want to learn more about. If you can bring in readers, you will be successful.

Need help becoming inspired to write an article? Look at the news to see what interesting stories are out there that may relate to your niche. Google Alerts allow you to find out what?s happening in your niche every day by email. Utilizing current news as subject matter will make your writing topical, current and interesting to all your readers.

Explain your product on multiple levels within one article. If your article covers technical information, make sure to include it. You should also explain the technical terms for your uninformed readers. It is important to address the needs of everyone in your target market.

Success in article marketing can be linked to trial and error. As you figure out what and what not to do, you will find success. By learning what works well and what doesn?t work, a person can better their articles.

Your content should be accessible to a broad audience to be successful marketing tools. Articles written in a style, which is difficult to follow, will decrease the chances of internet users reading the entire article. Brief paragraphs and common vocabulary will reach the widest audience.

Proper spelling and grammar are musts for successful article marketing. Look over everything that you write before it is published. Your article will be read and understood a lot easier if things are well written and not full of errors.

If you are using article marketing just to gain back links, you may still want to focus on creating high quality content. This will help you gain traffic from backlinks and referrals, increasing your visibility. You really are achieving the very best of both worlds.

Don?t use a writing service too frequently. Although these services will be able to give you many articles quickly, they may not be up to par on the quality. Actually, a lot of them don?t use English correctly. Write your own content, or hire an English-speaking writer yourself to ensure the quality remains high.

Use questions in article titles. Using a question gives readers a challenge. You will grab readers by using implied or direct questions in your titles. However, it?s important that your content is actually high quality.

Think about your audience and what it is like before writing any articles. Article marketing means you have to focus on a niche market and give them the information they need. Think about who you?re writing for and why they?ll want to read your article, then answer their questions or solve their problem.

Article directories can help you generate backlinks. Once your work goes on EzineArticles, also push it through to the best directories. Excellent directories you can utilize include GoArticles, ArticleBiz and ArticleDashboard. These are just a few of the many available directories that accept submissions, but be sure to research each one prior to using.

When making agreements to share content, make sure you learn the intentions behind acquiring your contents and your rights as the author. Any agreement you sign should clearly state the boundaries of the contract. Some websites or directories will claim authorship of your articles.

Ensure that the quality of your articles is high. Make sure your articles have great grammar and perfect spelling, as errors reflect on you and your brand. By doing so, your customers will regard you in a positive light.

Include images that pertain to you topic when it is appropriate. The Internet has many sites with images that will not cost you anything. Images can relay a message with one glance, and most people find them appealing. Photographs draw the interest of people, and they also fill space without a lot of words.

Once your article is on your business site and indexed, you need to submit it to directories. This allows your main article to pop up in searches, plus the other articles you have listed will provide other traffic.

Do you ever find yourself feeling less than inspired for article ideas? Think about writing from an alternative perspective. If you tend to write travel articles, for instance, target a sub-audience within your niche. Put together some useful tips for traveling families, such as how to keep children occupied in the car. You could also write about traveling concerns for seniors. Make sure to focus on specific problem issues, so you can stay in demand at all times.

The bottom line is that you are in charge of instituting an article marketing strategy. You need to prepare a plan on how you can keep your website running smoothly and how to deal with any issue that may arise. Utilize the tips provided above and your chances of success are maximized.

Hospital patient loads often at unsafe levels, physician survey says

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Nationwide, more than one-quarter of hospital-based general practitioners who take over for patients' primary care doctors to manage inpatient care say their average patient load exceeds safe levels multiple times per month, according to a new Johns Hopkins study. Moreover, the study found that one in five of these physicians, known as hospitalists, reports that their workload puts patients at risk for serious complications, or even death.

The research, reported in JAMA Internal Medicine, comes as health care systems anticipate an influx of new patients generated by the Affordable Care Act over the next few years; as restrictions on resident-physicians limit their duty hours; and as one in three physicians is expected to retire or otherwise leave medicine over the next 10 years, cumulatively resulting in increased patient care needs coupled with stressed staffing demands.

"As perceived by physicians, workload issues have the significant potential to do harm and decrease quality," says study leader Henry J. Michtalik, M.D., M.P.H., M.H.S., an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "It is the elephant in the room that cannot be ignored. We have to find that balance between safety, quality and efficiency."

The Johns Hopkins study comprised a survey of 890 hospitalists across the United States, 506 of whom responded. Twenty-two percent of the respondents reported ordering costly and potentially unnecessary tests, procedures or consults because they didn't have time to properly assess patients assigned to their care.

"If a hospitalist is short on time and a patient is having chest pains, for example, the doctor may be more likely to order additional tests, prescribe aspirin and call a cardiologist -- all because there isn't adequate time to immediately and fully evaluate the patient," Michtalik says.

For the study, Michtalik, a hospitalist at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and his colleagues electronically surveyed self-identified hospitalists enrolled in an online physician community, QuantiaMD.com. Of those who responded over the course of four weeks in November 2010, the average age was 38 years and more than half worked in community hospitals. Among other questions, physicians were asked to report what they felt was a safe number of patients to see in a typical shift. Most physicians reported that they could safely see 15 patients in a shift if they could focus 100 percent on clinical matters. When the average actual workload was compared to the perceived safe workload, 40 percent of physicians exceeded their own reported safe level.

Michtalik says that JHH's hospitalists typically stay below that number, while hospitalists at community hospitals often see more than 15 patients per shift.

"Hospitals need to evaluate workloads of attending physicians, create standards for safe levels of work and develop mechanisms to maintain workload at safe levels," he adds.

The study was supported by National Institutes of Health grant T32 HP10025-17-00, the NIH/Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research KL2 Award 5KL2RR025006 and the Johns Hopkins Hospitalist Scholars Program.

Other Johns Hopkins researchers involved in the study include Hsin-Chieh "Jessica" Yeh, Ph.D.; Peter J. Pronovost, M.D., Ph.D.; and Daniel J. Brotman, M.D.

Children's magazine promotes adult video games

LONDON (Reuters) - A British magazine distributed by a joint venture of Conde Nast and Hearst Corporation and aimed at primary school children has been featuring images of adult-rated video games.

The most recent issue of Cool Kidz, which is published by privately-owned LCD Publishing, contained images of five games that carried age ratings of 18 years, under the European gaming industry's PEGI rating scheme.

Screenshots appeared as double-page spreads, for use as posters, and were reproduced in spot-the-difference and other puzzles. Earlier issues also had images from 18- and 16-rated games.

Children's campaigners said the images reflected a growing problem of young children being exposed to violent video games, thereby increasing the chance they start playing them earlier.

It also highlighted what some critics describe as an apparent gap in regulation of children's magazines since LCD does not appear to have broken any law or industry rule.

LCD Publishing, which is based in Exeter, southwest England, said it took its responsibilities to young readers seriously.

"We censor the images we use to ensure that there is no blood or apparent body damage," owner Allen Trump said in an emailed statement.

He said the images used were suitable for children 12 or older, although he added the magazine was targeted at children up to 12 years.

The pictures printed depicted life-like computer generated images of men carrying weapons including assault rifles, Bowie knives, an axe, an anti-tank weapon and pistols.

The images showed explosions but not the visceral, bloody combat or scenes of a sexual nature for which the games are frequently criticized by parents' groups and women's rights advocates.

Cool Kidz is distributed by Comag, which is controlled by privately-owned U.S. magazine publishers Conde Nast, owners of Vogue magazine, and the Hearst Corporation, owner of Cosmopolitan magazine.

All three groups declined repeated requests for comment.

London-based Comag is one of the largest magazine distributors in the UK with annual turnover of around 230 million pounds ($360 million), according to its most recent accounts.

FREE PROMOTION

Trump said LCD downloaded the game images from the Internet although he was also occasionally approached by public relations firms seeking coverage of their clients' games.

Games publishers regularly post images on their websites, for use by online and print publishers, thus helping create awareness of their game.

Games firms contacted by Reuters said they were unaware Cool Kidz, which has been published for seven years, had been using their images.

The adult games Cool Kidz featured included Hitman: Absolution, Call of Duty Black Ops II, Assassins Creed III, Farcry 3 and Dishonored.

Representatives for Japan's Square Enix, publisher of the Hitman series, privately-owned Bethesda Softworks, publisher of Dishonored, and Ubisoft Entertainment, publisher of Assassins Creed III and Farcry 3, said they opposed the use but declined to say whether they would take any legal action against LCD.

Call of Duty publisher Activision declined to comment.

Alison Sherratt, senior vice-president of teachers union ATL, said publishers and government needed to do more to limit children's' exposure to games.

"It puts peer pressure on children .. If they see these images, it gives them the idea it's ok, it's all right to play these games," she added.

A spokeswoman for the Advertising Standards Authority said games companies could not advertise 18 rated games in children's magazines and a spokesman for the Video Standards Council (VSC), the UK affiliate of PEGI, said its rules also prohibited this.

However, since the images were not paid-for advertising, or supplied to Cool Kidz by the games publishers, these rules do not apply.

The Press Complaints Commission can adjudicate on complaints against magazines but only in respect of its members. LCD is not one.

The Office of Fair Trade and the Professional Publishers Association, trade group for magazine publishers, said they were unaware of any bodies that had regulatory powers over the content of children's magazines.

Stores Hold Own Against Online Competition | Stuff.co.nz

Scorpio Books owner Dave Cameron

FACE TO FACE: Scorpio Books owner Dave Cameron says customers still prefer to buy books at the Riccarton store rather than online

Many quake-displaced Christchurch retailers turned to online sales, took their first foray into Facebook or at the very least beefed up their company websites as a way to keep their businesses alive after the February 2011 quake.

But many also found online selling was no silver bullet.

A new survey of 11,000 people in 11 countries by PricewaterhouseCoopers reveals why.

The report debunks what it calls the 10 myths of multichannel retailing, which include beliefs that social media will soon be an indispensable retail channel, online retail is cannibalising sales in other channels, and physical stores will become simply showrooms in the future.

In fact, social media is not likely to become an important retail channel any time soon, the survey shows.

Seven out of 10 respondents said they never shopped through social media platforms, although nearly 40 per cent of respondents were following their favourite brands or retailers online, up from 33 per cent last year, as brand lovers were using social media as a "warmup" for future online or physical store shopping excursions.

Nick Paulsen, owner of clothing boutique Clash, said the business used social media mainly to develop the brand and personality of the business but it did not equate to sales.

Clash's Facebook page has 1249 "likes" and is focused on personality and style, music and trends.

"Sometimes we post pics [of new products] but we are not putting price points on there.

"I really want to develop a high level of customer service.

"I believe interaction between customers and retail staff members is so important.

A Facebook community took time to grow and was not a quick fix, Paulsen said.

Social media had limited impact on sales so far. "It's not as reactive as people think."

According to the report, other myths are that physical stores will become mainly showrooms in the future, and online sales are cannibalising sales in other channels.

In fact, respondents said although they researched online, they still preferred to buy products at a physical store.

And shoppers were spending more with their favourite multichannel retailers, not just shifting some purchases to a different brand.

For example, 23 per cent of respondents surveyed said they researched consumer electronics online and then went to a store to buy the product, compared with only 2 per cent who did it the other way around.

Clash does not sell items online.

"To me, online shopping is a real trend.

"I believe people want that interaction with a staff member on the shop floor.

"Online shopping doesn't give you that."

Christchurch bookstore Scorpio is holding its own against online competitors.

Scorpio Books co-owner David Cameron said most sales still came from traditional sales at its physical stores.

Scorpio Books has a website and online sales capacity but online sales were only a small part of the business, Cameron said.

"We do have a Facebook page and we put some quirky stuff up there and we get some favourable responses.

"But it is still not a great marketing tool.

"Despite all the hype about new technology, there is still strong demand for a range of titles that people can come and inspect at their leisure."

Cameron said he expected the trend of online sales would continue to grow but for now online sales were a "relatively tiny" part of overall sales.

After the February 2011 earthquake he had thought the company might have to push online sales but once the business established itself in Riccarton, it had not been necessary.

"The bricks-and-mortar sales have kept up with what we were doing in town, which was a good surprise."

Savoir Lingerie and Swimwear owner Kirsten Billcliff does not place much faith in selling online or using social media to drive sales.

Billcliff said the Merivale swimwear and lingerie boutique used its website to provide customers with information but did not offer online sales because it wanted to maintain relationships with customers.

"We do have Twitter and Facebook. Twitter I barely use at all, and Facebook I use . . . as a medium to keep customers up to date with the latest arrivals in stock," Billcliff said.

"It's about having a relationship with a retailer.

"And specifically, lingerie - it is one of those particular purchases that can't effectively be done online.

"A lot of women are left fairly dissatisfied with online purchases."

Facebook was great for things like getting information out quickly but the business did not "push it".

"We work on the basis our customers are busy, intelligent people. We don't consider our business the be-all and end-all in anybody's life.

"People don't need to spend more time sat at a computer."

Since the earthquakes, customers were doing a lot more pre-purchase research on Savoir's website before coming into the store, because it was harder to get around town since the earthquakes.

Billcliff had improved Savoir's website gallery so customers could have a look online and then come into the store.

However, other Christchurch retailers are reporting strong growth in online sales, include gift and homewares retailer Redcurrent, fashion retailer Lynn Woods and larger companies such as outdoor gear retailer Kathmandu, department store chain Smiths City and clothing retailer Hallenstein Glasson.

And for Christchurch confectionery business The Fudge Cottage, online sales are growing and are likely to be a major part of the business's revenue stream before too long.

The Fudge Cottage managing director Kevin Burns said that after the business was forced to leave its central Arts Centre premises and move to the Bishopdale Mall, the business had become a bit isolated from its central-city customers.

To "fill the gap" created by less foot traffic in between special occasions and seasonal events, and to reconnect with former customers, Burns invested in a responsive, shopper-friendly website designed by Christchurch web design company LeftClick.

Internet orders are already about 10 per cent of total sales, and the business is looking to grow that.

It has a wide network of customers overseas and elsewhere in New Zealand and it has just had its first direct order from Australia.

MULTICHANNEL RETAILING MYTHS OF MULTICHANNEL RETAILING:

? Social media will soon become an indispensable retail channel. On its own, social media isn't likely to become an important retail channel any time soon.

? Physical stores will become mainly showrooms in the future. Many multichannel shoppers research online, but more still prefer to buy at a physical store.

? The tablet will soon overtake the PC as the preferred online shopping device. Shoppers are still overwhelmingly using their PCs to shop online.

? As the world gets smaller, global consumers are becoming more alike. A wide range of local differences in consumer behaviours exists.

? China is the future model of online retail. China is leading in some key trends, but its multichannel and online model is unique.

? Domestic retailers will always have a "home field" advantage over global retailers.. Foreign retailers are making inroads into consumers' lists of favourite multichannel retailers.

? Global online players such as Amazon and eBay will always have a scale advantage over local online players. Many domestic pure players are holding their own.

? Retailers are better positioned than brands because they are closest to the customer. Consumers are shopping directly from manufacturers and many no longer distinguish between retailers and favourite brands.

? Online retail is cannibalising sales in other channels. Consumers are actually spending more with their favourite multichannel retailers, not just shifting some purchases to a different channel.

? Low price is the main driver of customer spending at favourite retailers.Customers value quality, innovative brands over price.

Lenovo debunks RIM deal rumors, says CFO was just chatting

Lenovo debunks RIM deal rumors, says CFO was just chatting

Lenovo turned a few heads last week when its CFO mentioned RIM as a possible acquisition target or partner, and with many eyes peering in its direction, the company's felt the need to clarify its relationship with the BlackBerry maker. An English-language statement -- courtesy of The Next Web -- says Wong Wai Ming was "speaking broadly about M&A strategy," and only included RIM in this comment as the interviewer asked about Lenovo's interest in the company specifically. While it doesn't provide any more fuel for the speculation fire, there's no denial here, and it's worth remembering that Wong mentioned the two have talked about potential arrangements, according to the original Bloomberg report. Damage limitation statement deployed, we doubt Lenovo will be bringing this up again unless anything formal happens. In the meantime, RIM's got slightly more immediate matters to concern itself with.

Toyota back on top as global auto sales champ

1 hr.

Toyota has officially reclaimed its global sales crown, the maker confirming it produced 9.75 million vehicles in 2012.

That was slightly ahead of a preliminary tally Toyota forecast as the year came to a close and locks it in first place ahead of General Motors, which sold 9.29 million vehicles.? Volkswagen, at 9.1 million, came in third for 2012.

Toyota?s sales were slightly lower than the company had projected earlier in the year, the shortfall reflecting the ongoing dispute between Japan and China over a chain of small, uninhabited islands both nations claim.?

In customary fashion, Toyota officials downplayed the sales results. ?Rather than going after numbers, we hope to make fine products, one by one, to keep out customers satisfied. The numbers are just a result of our policy. And our policy will continue unchanged,? Toyota spokeswoman Shino Yamada told the Associated Press.?

The Detroit Bureau:?US Auto Sales Surging as New Year Gets Underway

Nonetheless, it marked a significant comeback for the Japanese giant which first captured the global sales crown in 2008, displacing GM after seven decades as the sales leader. The U.S. maker plunged into bankruptcy the following year, recovering only with the assistance of a massive government loan.

With production back to normal, Toyota saw its sales in the home Japanese market surge 35% in 2012 while overseas sales jumped 23%.? Adding additional models to the ?family,? the Prius line firmed up its position as the world?s best-selling hybrid nameplate.
Toyota briefly fell to third in the global chase in 2011, the maker suffering significant production cuts in the wake of Japan?s March earthquake and tsunami. It didn?t fully restore its worldwide production network to normal operations until the end of the year.

But not everything went as well as expected ? notably in China where Toyota was just one of many Japanese businesses to suffer as the dispute over the Senkuko Islands ? which the Chinese call the Daioyu ? flared up. A Toyota dealership was torched and mobs destroyed many of the maker?s products. Sales fell by roughly half in the early weeks of the dispute though they have begun to recover more recently.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Mazda betting on alliances with Toyota, Fiat

Toyota did have some other issues, notably a surge of safety-related problems including additional recalls related to the maker?s unintended acceleration issue. In all, Toyota recalled more vehicles than any other maker in the American market in 2012, and it ended the year by agreeing to an estimated $1.2 billion settlement related to the unintended acceleration issue. Even so, most analysts say the maker?s reputation escaped with relatively little damage.

Toyota is forecasting another increase in sales for 2013, hoping to reach a record 9.91 million. That is still short of an earlier projection of at least 10 million, however.

General Motors officials have not yet set out their own forecast and that could depend on the strength of the ongoing U.S. recovery. Earlier this month, Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson said the maker expected sales in the States to reach somewhere between 15.0 million and 15.5 million for 2013.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Toyota Settles First of 100s of Wrongful Death, Injury Lawsuits

The wild card is Volkswagen, the aggressive German maker laying out plans to snatch the sales ground by the time it wraps up its current, 10-year growth plan in 2016.? The weakness of the home European market could delay that strategy, though VW hopes to offset that by stressing China, Latin America and the recovering U.S. market where it was one of the fastest-growing brands in 2012

Caterpillar pessimistic on any demand increase for 2013

(Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc, the world's largest maker of construction equipment, posted a 55 percent drop in quarterly profit on Monday due to a charge connected with accounting fraud at a Chinese subsidiary and weak demand among its dealers.

Caterpillar's bulldozers, tractors and other machines have been accumulating in warehouses due to slowing economies in China, Europe and the United States.

The company said it was able to sell off some of this glut in the fourth quarter, reducing the value of its inventory from the third quarter by $2 billion. Inventory levels, however, remain $1 billion above year-ago levels, and executives expect 2013 to be a "tough year."

Adding to the company's troubles, quarterly results were hit by a charge of 87 cents per share after the company discovered accounting fraud at a Chinese coal mining supplier it bought last year.

In a somber note on the global economy, Caterpillar said the "most significant favorable factor" for 2013 profit will be the absence of the ERA accounting fraud writedown, not increased demand for its machines.

"We're encouraged by recent improvements in economic indicators, but remain cautious," Caterpillar Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said in a statement on Monday.

For the fourth quarter, the company posted net income of $697 million, or $1.04 per share, compared with $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding one-time items, the company earned $1.46 per share. By that measure, analysts expected earnings of $1.69 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Wall Street, however, appeared to look past the China accounting fraud mess, sending Caterpillar's shares up 2.1 percent to $97.62 in morning trading.

Revenue fell 7 percent to $16.08 billion. Analysts expected revenue of $16.12 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Caterpillar expects to earn $7 to $9 per share in 2013, below the $9.12 per share analysts expect.

CHINA FRAUD

Caterpillar closed the purchase of ERA Mining Machinery Ltd and its subsidiary Siwei, China's fourth-largest maker of hydraulic coal mine roof supports, last June, paying $653.4 million (HK$5.06 billion).

After the deal closed, Caterpillar found that physical inventory did not match accounting statements, a discovery that led to the charge. The case has opened questions about Caterpillar's research into ERA before the deal, as well as the adequacy of its auditors.

Caterpillar does not expect the fraud to harm its 2013 profit, but it will hinder the company's expansion into China, the world's largest coal producer.

Emory Williams, the chairman of ERA when the Caterpillar deal closed, ended days of silence on Monday, saying in a statement he was "dismayed" by the accounting charge Caterpillar was taking.

Williams said nothing about the accusation of accounting misconduct in his statement.

Citigroup Inc and law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP served as financial and legal advisers to Caterpillar on the transaction. Blackstone and DLA Piper acted as ERA's financial and legal advisers.

A source directly involved with the Caterpillar deal previously told Reuters that RSM Nelson Wheeler was ERA's auditor, while Deloitte and Ernst & Young acted on Caterpillar's side.

None of the auditors has commented.

Anonymous hijacks federal website to avenge activist's death

5 hrs.

WASHINGTON???The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide. The FBI is investigating.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch (http://www.ussc.gov), was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online, and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

The FBI's Richard McFeely, executive assistant director of the agency's?Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch, said in a statement that "we were aware as soon as it happened and are handling it as a criminal investigation. We are always concerned when someone illegally accesses another person's or government agency's network."

Hours after the hijacking, pages on the USSC.gov website were available only sporadically.
