Have You Thanked Your Teacher Today? - Stories from School AZ

Thankyou
During this busy time of year, so many teachers and school staff strive to be the best.? They decorate their rooms, write their lesson plans, make copies, and write each child?s name on their soon-to-be desk.? When viewing such actions, one is led to believe the teacher desires to offer each of his students the best year, yet.? But, where does such motivation and inspiration come from?

I have often heard teachers discuss their memories of grade school.? As they go back in time to the days of their youth, whether long ago or recent, they share their stories which have led them to this point in their lives.?

While delivering a training on school culture, I found myself making reference to my own teachers.? A few came to mind who offered me more than an education; they offered me a new way of life.? They showed me I could be more than I ever imagined possible.? And, well, if my teachers believed in me, it had to be true.? Although I am fortunate to have fond memories, I have heard some which have not been so lucky.? They tell of their difficult times and the impact it had on their lives; a model of what not to do.?

As educators, most of us can name our favorite teacher, the teacher who made it all possible, the teacher who inspired us.? But, I ask you, have you thanked your teacher??

I remember early in my teaching career, feeling overwhelmed and not being able to continue with my classroom demands, my college courses as I furthered my education, and my personal life.? It was at that time I received an email from one of my former students.? He stated how I had inspired him to finish high school and continue his education, how appreciative he was that I cared about his love of music and the performing arts.? I must admit, I sat at my desk and cried.? His words had such a profound impact on me.? I wondered if I had ever expressed my sentiment to my teachers who had made such an impact in my life.?

When I graduated with my doctorate, I called my 8th grade science teacher.? I took time to visit my high school physics teacher and Key Club advisors.? Although there were other teachers who helped me along the way, my heart led me to these particular people.? It is because my parents trusted my teachers and my teachers believed in me that I was able to give to others what they had given me?the drive to achieve my dreams.?

To all the educators who devote endless hours and wonder if it is worth it, it is.? To all the teachers who think kids are not listening to you, they are.? To all the teachers, thank your teachers.? And, I thank you for all you do every minute of every day for every child.

Have you thanked a teacher today?? Have you thanked your teacher today?
