Russia Cuts Off U.S. Museums in Legal Feud - Philanthropy Today ...

Russia has banned art loans to American museums to protest a U.S. court order that it turn over thousands of religious books and manuscripts to an Orthodox Jewish organization, the Los Angeles Times writes.

The dispute has disrupted shows at several major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum, with Russian authorities withholding or demanding the return of objects. The latest to face potential collateral damage is the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which planned to include 38 items from Russia in an exhibition of Islamic art scheduled to open Saturday.

Chabad, a branch of Hasidic Judaism founded in Russia in the 18th century, filed suit in 2004 for the return of a massive collection of religious texts seized during the Russian Revolution and World War II. A federal judge last year ordered Russia to turn over the materials, but the Russian government has refused, saying U.S. courts have no authority over its property.
