Basketball Physics: The Anatomy of the Free Throw

In theory, the free throw is a gift. The shooter shoots with no elbows thrown in his direction, no seven-foot-tall man trying to block the shot, and no screaming crowd (unless he plays for the visiting team). So what makes this solo shot so choke-worthy? In the spirit of March Madness, we break down the anatomy of this seemingly simple shot.

Body Mechanics

"The lift that you have as a free-throw shooter starts from the feet," says Bruce Kreutzer, a shooting specialist at the Mark Price Basketball Academy in Suwanee, Ga., who has been working with the NBA and amateur players for 25 years. "The majority of players today use their upper body first, which really throws off the rhythm."

When they step up to the line, players should align their body?toes, hips, and shoulders?directly with the basket, Kreutzer says. Seems easy enough, but things soon become complicated. The amount of bend in the knee needed to make a shot is directly proportional to a player's distance from the hoop, and players often struggle to find the amount of bend that correlates with the right amount of energy buildup. Too much energy and your shot is a brick off the backboard; not enough and it's an air ball.

As a player prepares to shoot, the ball should be resting on the finger pads (that first roll of knuckles just above your palms) and not the fingertips, Kreutzer says?"This way there's no snap, just a rhythmic flop." In the release, the shooting arm and support arm should extend toward the basket. The same goes for the rest of the body; the shooter's weight should be traveling forward in a controlled calf-raise motion.

Debunking the Swish

North Carolina State University mechanical engineering professor Larry Silverberg, an avid baller himself, set out to determine the physics behind the perfect free throw. With his colleague Chau Tran, he co-wrote a software program to analyze three-dimensional computer-simulated free-throw trajectories.

"If you take top athletes in any sport, most have a really hard time explaining what they're doing," Silverberg says. "By simulating millions of shots we could see patterns that tend to confirm best practices."

Their extensive research allowed them to establish a few guidelines for the foul line: aim toward the back of the rim with 3 Hz of backspin and at 52 degrees to the horizontal. Oh, and do all this at a perfectly smooth and consistent speed.

Let's take the first piece of advice: Aim for the back of the rim. Despite what most people may think, Silverberg found that aiming for the center of the basket actually decreases the likelihood of a successful shot by almost 3 percent. Silverberg and Tran found that the sweet spot is actually 2.82 inches past the center of the hoop. You might make less "nothing but net" shots this way, as the ball is more likely to hit the back of the rim and go in, but your overall shooting percentage will be greater.

Second piece of advice: the backspin. Three Hz of backspin translates to three complete revolutions of the ball before it reaches the hoop, and the reason you want this backspin is that it deadens the ball, should it hit the rim or backboard during flight. In their simulations, Silverberg and Tran found no additional advantage to more than three revolutions; plus, they found that players struggle to put more backspin than this anyway.

Finally, the angle: Without a protractor in your sneakers, it might be difficult for players to execute a launch angle of exactly 52 degrees. The shorthand version that Silverberg tells players, then, is to shoot the ball so that it's about 2 inches below the top of the backboard at its highest point.

"Imagine you drew a line from where the ball is released to the hoop?that's the angle from the horizontal," he says. "A good way to visualize this is aiming pretty close to the top of the backboard at the top of [the ball's] trajectory."

Of course, this is a loose rule, in part because basketball players vary wildly in height. Silverberg and Tran came up with the 52 degrees rule for a six-foot-six player, so the angle would be different for a seven-foot center, a six-foot-six point guard, or a five-foot-eight insurance salesman playing with buddies on the weekend.

But of all the parameters of the free throw, maintaining a constant speed is the most important but also the most difficult, Silverberg says. Unlike the geometric conditions, backspin and speed are variables that rely on the shooter's ability to maintain a consistent motion?arguably the most difficult aspect of any shot.

Noah's Arc

Football players watch endless game film; baseball players in a hitting slump head to the video room to see what's amiss with their swing. And basketball players can watch video of their free-throw attempts with a full statistical analysis of each shot.

John Carter, CEO of Noah Basketball, is one of the people bringing big data to basketball. He developed a little device called Noah that analyzes the arc of the ball once it leaves a player's hands, computing its angle of entry into the basket and spitting out this number in real time so that shooters can adjust their arc accordingly. For a free throw, entry-angle perfection is around 43 degrees. And, unlike the launch angle, which varies with player height, the entry angle is the same for all shooters.

"If a player shoots flat, the hole closes up," Carter says. "There's a sweet spot in the mid forties where you can have a little bit of variation in the arc, but the ball goes in at almost the same distance from back of rim every time."

Noah devices have compiled statistics for thousands of free-throw shots, confirming what Silverberg's simulations showed. Even though an entry angle of about 50 degrees corresponds to a perfect swish, the Noah data showed that players' overall shooting percentage started to decrease at above 45 degrees. So great shooters hit the back of the rim more often than they swish.

8 Year-Old Girl's Birthday Party Idea: Ponies and Puppies! ? MomOf6

Puppy and Pony Birthday Party

You know, it?s right about the time that the kids turn 8 years old that birthday parties become a bit tricky. An over-themed party involving lots of structured activities and crafts may seem too young for your budding tween. Yet, for some kids, a full-blown sleepover party complete with staying up super-late and watching tons of movies may be more than a tender heart (used to being close to home) is ready for. So navigating the 8-year old birthday party can be a challenge.

Enter the half-sleepover party. All the benefits of fun hanging with your girlfriends in your jammies, eating lots of birthday cake, popcorn, and other goodies, with none of the commitment of a full night away from Mom & Dad. If you decide to go this route, your next step is picking a theme? and I say- why not focus on the things that your daughter loves the best? Which in our case, is ponies (Charlotte just started taking horseback riding lessons) and puppies (she has our dog Bentley that she adores!)!

The Invitation:
Party invite Momof6 8 Year Old Girls Birthday Party Idea: Ponies and Puppies!

After spending some time cruising the internet searching for some cute puppies and ponies artwork, I couldn?t find exactly what I was looking for, although I did find a beautiful picture of a little girl and a horse for an equestrian-themed birthday party. I emailed the creator, Nathalia, from Firefly Creative Design, and asked if she could create something for me that I could use for the invites and party ?goods that also included a puppy in the print?preferably a golden doodle, like our dog Bentley. And when she emailed me back and offered to create the artwork for only $16, I was thrilled!

I uploaded her .jpg file to Picnik,?added all of the party details and sent off the invitations. I also used the same artwork to create the thank-you notes for the party.

The Thank You Notes:

The Party Decorations:

Puppy and Pony Party Table Decorations 8 Year Old Girls Birthday Party Idea: Ponies and Puppies!

We decided that the girls would eat dinner in our dining room, so to make it festive we decorated with tissue paper pom-poms and these little cards with the pony and puppy art. We placed a few beanie baby ponies and puppies in hurricane glass holders and polka-dotted the table with jellybeans.

The Goodie Bags, Cake, Party Punch, and Popcorn Bags:

Our final prep for the party included baking this multi-layered cake, preparing our family-favorite ?party punch?, assembling popcorn bags to be passed out during the movie, and putting together goodie bags for the guests to take home.

The Order of Events:

I always say that the decor is nice, but the heart of the party is how you entertain the guests and make the birthday child feel special. So here is how our pony and puppy party unfolded:

6pm- Guests arrived (we invited 9 girls). As we waited for everyone to show up, the girls enjoyed playing Just Dance 3 on the Wii. And let me tell you- this could have been the event to carry the entire party! The girls loved playing this as a group- no one cares who gets to hold the Wii remote, they just want to DANCE!

6:15pm- Dinnertime! Instead of typical pizza fare, we decided to offer a make-your-own salad and pasta bar. This was a HUGE hit- and certainly much less expensive than ordering in pizza! We served two different kinds of pasta (linguine and penne) butter, sauce, or sauce with meatballs. We toasted garlic bread, served up a big bowl of romaine, and the girls could top their salad with carrots, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, croutons, and three kinds of dressing.

7:00pm- Shrinky-Dink Necklace Craft

Puppy and Pony Party Necklace Craft 8 Year Old Girls Birthday Party Idea: Ponies and Puppies!

Everyone loves to make shrinky-dinks! I purchased sheets of the ruff ?n ready plastic, and used my heart punch to cut out hearts, and then used a regular hole punch to make a hole in each heart. The girl colored their hearts and then watched as we shrunk them into tiny charms in the toaster oven. We also took a group picture of all of the girls, which I printed on special printer-friendly shrinky-dink plastic and then shrunk them into tiny charms to wear on their ribbon necklaces behind the heart. (But I will admit that printer shrinky-dink plastic is very hard to work with, and the results weren?t as great as I hoped- the ink still bled a bit even after trying to dry it thoroughly with a hairdryer set on a cool setting).

7:30pm- birthday cake

BD Party Rainbow Cake 8 Year Old Girls Birthday Party Idea: Ponies and Puppies!

The cool thing about our multi-layered white cake was that it was actually a rainbow cake! (After all, Charlotte?s birthday is shared with St. Patrick?s Day!)

7:50pm- the girls gathered onto sleeping bags that were spread out in the family room to watch ?Moondance Alexander?, a great movie about a girl and a horse. Most of the party guests (as well as the birthday girl) had never seen the film, so they were enthralled. After about 45 minutes into the movie, we served popcorn.

8:30pm- The movie wrapped up, the girls put on their necklaces and headed back for a little more Just Dance 3 before the party ended up at 9pm.

The Goodie Bags

Inside each of the goodie bags was a beanie baby puppy and homemade sugar cookies cut into pony shapes and individually decorated by my ever-so-patient and talented husband!

This was truly one of the easiest and least expensive parties we have ever hosted, and Charlotte loved every minute of it. And that was the very best part.

If you enjoyed this post, please consider tweeting about it or posting a link to it on facebook! I?d sincerely appreciate it!

What You Need to Know About Eye Health as You Age | Active ...

One of the facts of life you will probably have to face as you age is declining vision. It?s rare that anyone gets to keep the perfect vision they once had in their younger years as they age into their senior years. Some forms of vision impairment due to aging are more common, while others can be prevented or delayed depending on lifestyle habits.

Even if you do develop age-related vision impairment in your later years, an ophthalmologist can help you determine, which, if any vision correction surgeries can restore or improve your sight.

What Vision Impairments are Caused by Aging?

Cataracts: By the age of 80, nearly half of all seniors in the United States have developed cataracts to some extent. A cataract is essentially a cloud that forms in the lens of the eye, preventing light from entering and therefore impairing vision. Because cataracts develop very gradually, many people aren?t aware that they have them unless they get their eyes checked regularly by an eye doctor.

Macular Degeneration: Also one of the most common vision impairments in the elderly, macular degeneration affects the retina of the eye. This eye disease is typically seen in individuals after the age of 45. Like cataracts, vision loss from macular degeneration is also gradual, and is typically diagnosed by an eye doctor through regular visits.

How Can You Prevent Premature Vision Loss?Eye Health as You Age

Regular Check Ups

It?s better to catch vision problems before time allows them to get worse. Scheduling an eye appointment every 12 months is a good habit to get in to, especially for those older than 40. Early diagnosis and treatment of any eye disease symptoms can help prolong your vision for much longer than if left untreated for long periods of time.

Protect Your Eyes From the Sun

Everyone should be conscious of how exposed their eyes are to the sun. Even if you already wear glasses or contacts, protecting your eyes from the sun?s harmful UV rays is an essential part of preserving your vision as you age. Make sure you always have a pair of sunglasses on hand.

Eat a Balanced Diet

While there is a lot of speculation about particular foods that can improve eyesight, a general rule of thumb is to ensure that overall, your diet is providing you with all of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Foods that benefit your body will also benefit your eyes, especially vitamins C, A and E.

Correcting Vision with Surgery

Cataract surgery has improved immensely over the past several decades ? what used to be extremely painful and require and lengthy recovery period now can be completed in a matter of minutes, involves little to no pain, and requires virtually no recovery period. During a cataract procedure, the clouded lens of the eye is broken up with a laser, removed, and replaced with an artificial lens. Depending on the design and quality of this artificial lens, some patients can experience perfect or near-perfect vision for the rest of their life with no need for glasses or contacts.

Surgery for macular degeneration is also an option, though the results aren?t as successful as cataract surgery. Laser surgery for macular degeneration is helpful in improving the condition and preventing it from worsening, however, surgery cannot usually reverse the effects of macular degeneration.

Don?t wait till it?s too late to start taking care of your eyes!

COLLEGE STATION, March 21, 2012 Unlike their colorful wings, the future of Monarch butterflies may not be too bright and their numbers are expected to be alarmingly down again this year, says a Texas A&M University researcher.

Craig Wilson, a senior research associate in the Center for Mathematics and Science Education and a long-time butterfly enthusiast, says reports by the World Wildlife Fund, private donors and Mexico's Michoacan state show that Monarch numbers will be down almost 30 percent in 2012 as they make their annual trek from their breeding grounds in Mexico and move across Texas.

The figures show an alarming decades-long decline in their numbers, Wilson says, adding that it is best "that we take the long view rather than yearly cycles.

"The latest information shows that Monarchs will be down from 25 to 30 percent this year, and that has been part of a disturbing trend the last few years," Wilson notes.

"Last year's severe drought and fires in the region no doubt played a part, resulting in less nectar for the Monarchs as they migrated south. But estimates show that each year, millions of acres of land are being lost that would support Monarchs, either by farmers converting dormant land for crop use mainly to herbicide tolerant corn and soybeans or the overuse of herbicides and mowing. Milkweed is the key plant because it's the only plant where the female will lay her eggs."

The loss of such lands is a critical factor in the Monarchs' survival, Wilson explains.

"Chip Taylor, who is the director of Monarch Watch at the University of Kansas, estimates that 100 million acres of land have already been lost that previously supported Monarchs," Wilson notes.

Most of the Monarch reserves are in the Mexican state of Michoacan. It's an area where Monarchs spend the winter and mate before heading north, Wilson points out.

In the spring, the butterflies leave Mexico and across Texas, and Wilson has noticed both eggs and young Monarch caterpillars feeding on milkweed in the Monarch Waystation, a butterfly garden outside his office. The adults will fly various routes through Texas, with the fourth generation eventually arriving in Canada.

This year, according to the Texas Monarch Watch, Monarchs covered about 7.14 acres of forest in their Mexican breeding grounds compared to 9.9 acres last year, and it shows a continued long-term downward trend in Monarch population since official surveys began in 1994.

Wilson says there has to be a national effort to save Monarchs or their declining numbers will reach the critical stage.

"We need a national priority of planting milkweed to assure there will be Monarchs in the future," he says. "If we could get several states to collaborate, we might be able to promote a program where the north-south interstates were planted with milkweed, such as Lady Bird Johnson's program to plant native seeds along Texas highways 35-40 years ago. This would provide a 'feeding' corridor right up to Canada for the Monarchs."
