Barnes & Noble cut the price of Nook Tablet, Nook Color once more, really wants to be in your Christmas list

Barnes & Noble recently took the wraps of two new tablets, updating its range (along with everyone else it seems) in preparation for next year. That doesn't mean it's washed its hands with the OG Nook tablet and Nook Color -- in fact, both just got another price cut. Starting tomorrow, you'll be able to pick up the original 8GB tablet for $159, the 16GB version for $179 and the Nook Color for $139. With two price cuts in three months, anyone would think it was trying to get rid of stock. This still puts last year's lower capacity model shoulder to shoulder with Amazon's 2012 Kindle Fire (with ad subsidies), but with Christmas just around the corner, we're not complaining about more choice for less dollars.

Two-thirds of jobs go to immigrants (legal and illegal) during ...

President Obama is proud of ?five million new jobs?.? Read the fine print before you cheer.

?Two-thirds of those who have found employment under President Obama are immigrants, both legal and illegal, according to an analysis that suggests immigration has soaked up a large portion of what little job growth there has been over the past three years.?

?His numbers are stark: Since the first quarter of 2009, the number of immigrants of working age (16 to 65) who are employed has risen 2 million, from 21.2 million to 23.2 million. During the same time, native-born employment has risen just 1 million, to reach 119.9 million.

Two thirds of the Obama jobs are low paying and menial?for illegal aliens.? A recovery for ?immigrants? is the Obama plan?recovery for most American citizens is not part of it?unless you are a donor and want a $200million grant for a phony energy company.

Two-thirds of jobs go to immigrants during Obama?s four years

By Stephen Dinan, The Washington Times,? 10/31/12

Two-thirds of those who have found employment under President Obama are immigrants, both legal and illegal, according to an analysis that suggests immigration has soaked up a large portion of what little job growth there has been over the past three years.

The Center for Immigration Studies is releasing the study Thursday morning, a day ahead of the final Labor Department unemployment report of the campaign season, which is expected to show a sluggish job market more than three years into the economic recovery.

That slow market, combined with the immigration numbers, could explain why Mr. Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney have struggled to find a winning jobs message in some of the country?s hardest-hit postindustrial regions.

?It?s extraordinary that most of the employment growth in the last four years has gone to the foreign-born, but what?s even more extraordinary is the issue has not even come up during a presidential election that is so focused on jobs,? said Steven A. Camarota, the center?s research director, who wrote the report along with demographer Karen Zeigler.

His numbers are stark: Since the first quarter of 2009, the number of immigrants of working age (16 to 65) who are employed has risen 2 million, from 21.2 million to 23.2 million. During the same time, native-born employment has risen just 1 million, to reach 119.9 million.

It?s a trend years in the making: Immigrants are working more, and native-born Americans are working less.

In 2000, 76 percent of natives aged 18 to 65 were employed, but that dropped steadily to 69 percent this September. By contrast, immigrants started the last decade at 71 percent employment and rose to a peak of 74 percent at the height of the George W. Bush-era economic boom. They since have slid down to 69 percent amid the sluggish economy.

Competitive advantage

The Center for Immigration Studies, which wants the government to impose stricter limits on immigration, based its numbers on the Census Bureau?s Current Population Survey.

Alex Nowrasteh, a policy analyst at the Cato Institute, which favors letting the markets rather than the government control the flow of immigration, said Mr. Camarota?s numbers are ?making a mountain out of a molehill.?

He said delving into specific numbers explains why immigrants have done better over the past four years: They generally gravitate toward parts of the economy that have picked up faster in the nascent recovery.

?Most of the areas of the U.S. economy that are hiring right now, like agriculture and high-tech industries, are those where immigrants have always been overly represented,? Mr. Nowrasteh said.

He also said immigrants are quicker to jump into the rebounding job market while native-born Americans, who under federal law have more welfare options and access to unemployment benefits, are slower to find work.

Mr. Nowrasteh and Mr. Camarota said another factor could be immigrants? mobility.

Natives have roots wherever they live, and it may take higher wages to get them to move for jobs, even if their homes are in depressed areas. Immigrants already have uprooted themselves and can more easily pick places where jobs are available.

Indeed, Mr. Camarota?s numbers show that most of the immigrant employment growth went to new arrivals, not to foreign-born residents already in the United States ? a figure that suggests immigrants already settled here were having some of the same difficulties as the native-born.

There is some bright news: an uptick over the past year among native-born Americans accounting for two-thirds of all new employment growth.

Full overhaul

Net immigration ? both legal and illegal ? averaged more than 1.1 million in the 1990s and slightly less than 900,000 in the past decade.

Mr. Camarota said it didn?t slow much despite the economic downturn.

?We have a situation where the job market ? the bottom fell out, yet we kept legal immigration relatively high without even a national debate,? he said. ?As a consequence, a lot of the job growth has been going to immigrants.?

Immigration has been a touchy political issue for more than a decade, and while all sides agree that the system is broken, efforts to overhaul it in 2006 and 2007 fell short.

This campaign, Mr. Romney and Mr. Obama have talked about streamlining the legal immigration system to allow in more high-tech workers. Mr. Romney has said he wants to ?staple a green card? to every advanced degree in science, mathematics or engineering earned by an immigrant.

Beyond that, Mr. Obama has vowed to make legalizing illegal immigrants a major push in a second term ? and has said if he wins re-election, he thinks Republicans will embrace that goal, realizing that otherwise, Hispanic voters will reject the GOP.

Mr. Romney has talked about legalizing a small number of illegal immigrants, though he has been studiously vague about his specific plans in an effort to try not to alienate voters on either side of the issue.

Mr. Obama did take action this year to grant many illegal immigrants up to 30 years of age a tentative legal status that prevents them from being deported and authorizes them to work in the United States.

Some Republicans in Congress have criticized Mr. Obama?s policy, saying it violates his powers and will mean more competition for scarce jobs.

Mr. Romney has said he would not rescind any stays of deportation that Mr. Obama issues but wouldn?t issue any new ones himself.

The current system doles out legal visas based on family ties or employment prospects or even a random lottery designed to increase the diversity of those coming to the United States.

In 2007, senators proposed scrapping the legal system and replacing it with a points-based system that would assign a desirability grade to would-be immigrants. Work skills would have gained under that system.

But that proposal, along with the rest of the bill, collapsed amid a bipartisan Senate filibuster.

Mr. Nowrasteh at the Cato Institute said those decisions shouldn?t be left up to bureaucrats anyway.

?The government can?t pick winners and losers when it comes to green-energy firms like Solyndra, so what makes you think it can pick winners and losers when it comes to immigration?? he asked rhetorically.

Fitness and Breastfeeding | The Leaky B@@b

by Star Rodriguiz, IBCLC

fitness, fit moms, fitness for moms, walking, breastfeeding and fitness

Moms can burn 500 calories a day while breastfeeding.? So that?s all you have to do, right?? Just breastfeed?? And the weight will all magically fall off and you will look like Giselle?

Breastfeeding can absolutely help you to lose weight, but many moms find that they need to embark on a plan of diet and exercise, too.? (And, just for good measure, please let me remind you not to begin a diet/exercise plan without consulting a medical professional and all that jazz. ?Also, don?t rush into physical activity right after having a baby, take the time you need to really heal and adjust to having a new baby, pushing your body too soon could lead to further health issues. ?Most moms find they need to wait at least 6 weeks, often closer to 12 weeks postpartum before they start exercising.)

BUT WAIT!? There are a lot of things that people talk about with diet and exercise and breastfeeding that make doing it seem?well, like maybe not the best idea.? So what?s the reality?? Can you safely breastfeed and lose weight?? Or exercise?

I am so glad that I just asked that for you.? The short answer is yes!? Of course!? But the long answer is addressed below, as we unmask three very common breastfeeding myths?

Myth #1- You need to eat A LOT to make milk, and drink A LOT, too.

Ok, so here?s the deal.? When you are breastfeeding, you should eat to hunger and drink to thirst.? So, if you?re hungry?? Eat something.? If you?re thirsty?? Drink something.? You may find yourself ravenous, or you may find that your appetite has changed little.? Listen to your body?s cues.? There?s probably little to no need to shove extra food in your mouth or force yourself to drink excessive amounts.? In fact, over drinking water has been linked to a lowered supply.? You may find yourself thirstier, and if you genuinely feel that you need to drink, do it.? Just don?t force a specific amount down your throat in hopes that you will increase supply.

Now, that doesn?t mean you should rejoice and eat whatever, whenever.? Eating a mostly healthy and balanced diet is important.? Few of us are going to be able to eat perfectly all the time, though, especially with a new baby.? So I always tell my clients to continue to take a multivitamin, like their prenatal, throughout the breastfeeding relationship.? Moms probably need some extra Vitamin D, too. ?(See this study for more information.) ?Most moms can safely take 4000-6000 IUs a day.? This will not only help you, but can help to increase the Vitamin D in your breastmilk, too.? However, you should check with your doctor before increasing any dosages or starting any new vitamins.

Myth #2- You can?t cut calories while breastfeeding.

Not entirely true.? You probably should wait to diet until at least 6-8 weeks, and you shouldn?t go from eating, say, 2500 calories a day to 1500 overnight.? But as long as you have an established supply, decrease your calories slowly, and go no lower than 1500-1800 calories per day as appropriate for your body type, you can absolutely work on losing some weight.? 1-2 pounds a week is a pretty safe range of loss, whether or not you are breastfeeding.

Some popular programs have developed breastfeeding options to help moms lose weight safely while breastfeeding.? Weight Watchers and My Fitness Pal both have breastfeeding options.

Myth #3- Exercising while breastfeeding will make my supply lower/make my milk gross or sour!

Let?s talk about exercise decreasing supply, first.? If you are constantly working out to exhaustion (and you?re probably not.? I did P90X for about a month when I was in the third month of breastfeeding my daughter, and it didn?t fall into the exhaustive, supply-diminishing category,) yes, you may see some reduction in supply.? Regular, moderate exercise, however, might actually increase your production, although that?s not guaranteed. ?Even high intensity exercise when it?s balanced well with adequate caloric intake, is fine and many mothers experience no trouble with high intensity work outs.

Raise your hand if you?ve heard that your baby won?t drink your milk if you have been exercising, because lactic acid will build up and sour your milk.? The entire premise for this was one study with a whole lot of issues. Further studies have not been able to replicate this, and have, instead, pretty clearly shown that babies don?t refuse the breast after exercising. ?Anecdotal evidence, while not ?official,? shows that many breastfeeding mothers experience quite the satisfied customer in their breastfed baby following even intense work outs.

One thing you do need to worry about while breastfeeding and exercising is wearing a supportive bra that isn?t too tight.? Some sports bras can be really, really binding.? You want to avoid that, obviously, to keep from having issues with plugged ducts and the like.

Russian report criticizes US on human rights, US responds 'bring it on'

The author of the professionally written report says it is meant to broaden the conversation by inviting Americans to see that they have plenty of problems in their own country.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / October 24, 2012

Russian prisoners rights activist Valery Borschev gestures during a news conference in Moscow on Wednesday. A respected group of Russian human rights activists has backed claims made by jailed opposition activist Leonid Razvozzhayev that he was tortured into confessing to plotting riots ? the same week that Moscow released a report criticizing human rights in the US.

Russian officials claim they are tired of being criticized by the US government for Russia's alleged human rights abuses, democratic deficiencies, and systemic inadequacies, in many cases from a standpoint that's less than objective, often ignorant of cultural relativities, and sometimes downright hypocritical.

So, the Russian Foreign Ministry, at the behest of Russia's State Duma, has decided to give the United States a blast of its own medicine ? and, its main author claims, hopefully spark a dialogue ? by issuing a well-documented 50-page report on the state of civil rights, electoral democracy, and judicial independence, among other things, inside the US.

It's a professionally written report, based largely on the work of US nongovernment and academic sources, that covers a gamut of social problems that will mostly be familiar to any well-informed American. But the Russian purpose, argues its main author Konstantin Dolgov, is not necessarily to tell Americans anything new but to urge them to change their angle of view and learn to do without the harsh judgements that he sees lurking behind many official US pronouncements on Russia.

"Nobody likes to be hectored," Mr. Dolgov says. "We are a young democracy. We have our problems, but we also have serious achievement that we hope won't be overlooked."

Dolgov, the Foreign Ministry's special representative for human rights, insists it's not an attempt to copy the US State Department's annual reports on human rights around the world, but simply an effort to broaden the conversation by inviting Americans to see that they have plenty of problems in their own country, and should deal with them before lecturing to others.

"They criticize and judge everyone except themselves. We think the US should not try to monopolize the role of leader, teacher, and mentor in the field of human rights," Mr. Dolgov says. "If they want to do this, they should be aware that they are also being monitored."

Dolgov says Russia isn't judging the US, or denying that it's an established democratic state, just that Americans should be aware that they're living in a glass house.

"Nobody is rejecting the historic accomplishments of the US, but at the same time they should be aware that serious problems continue to exist, and some of them are growing," he says.

His preference would be for the US and Russia to discuss differences behind closed doors, in intergovernmental committees that already exist but have fallen into disuse, such as the US-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission.

As for human rights violations in Russia, that's not his department, he says. The Kremlin has a human rights ombudsman, Vladimir Lukin, who deals with domestic matters and produces annual reports of his own.
