5-ways-to-make-money-online - subhub

Introduction

For entrepreneurs venturing into the online business world for the first time, it can seem like a very confusing place.

There is so much jargon and information it is hard to narrow down what is really important, what is useful and what is a waste of time.

In this article I?m going to focus on simplifying what you need to know about making money online and then run through a case study of a website that does all these things really well.

The Five Revenue Streams

There are essentially five ways that you can make money from your content on the internet.

I?ll now go through each of these revenue streams in more detail.

Advertising

Advertising is the simplest way to generate revenues from online content.

In the early days of internet business website owners had to sell the advertising space on their sites directly to the advertisers or to an advertising agency. This meant only sites with high levels of traffic were viable, and the whole process of sourcing ads was expensive and time consuming.

Now adding ads to your website is easy.

Text Advertisements

The most common advertisement and easiest to implement on your website are text ads which automatically change depending on the content on a page. For example if a content page is about taking a vacation on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, the text ads that are displayed should also be about Anguilla, as in this example:

The biggest text ad network in the world is Google Adsense (www.google.com/adsense). This is the service new publishers should start with. Other growing networks include:

  • Yahoo Publisher Network

  • Microsoft Adcentre

  • Adbrite

  • Kontera

  • Chikita

Display Advertisements

Before text ads the most important format was banner advertisements which usually appeared in the masthead of a page. Website owners have now become much more creative in the ad sizes that they offer. The two most common formats are banner ads and 125 x 125 button ads.

Other Ad Formats

As advertising becomes more competitive so publishers and ad networks are responding by creating more exciting ad formats which include:

  • Video ads

  • Content link ads ? when the mouse pointer passes over a link with two lines under it, an ad appears in a pop-up box

  • Pop-up ads ? appear on top of a web page. Very unpopular with users

  • Pop-under ads ? appear under a website when the browser is closed. Not as annoying as pop-up ads, but still irritate web users

Other Ways of Making Money from Advertising

Advertising can also include:

  • Sponsorship ? get part or all of your website sponsored

  • Classified ads ? Create a classified ads section and charge people for posting an ad

  • Jobs Board ? Add a jobs board to your site and charge companies for posting jobs

A list of over 101 ad networks. Not very useful, because it does not provide any information about each company, but it does give an indication of the size of the market -http://hubpages.com/hub/101-Google-Adsense-Alternatives

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is halfway between advertising and ecommerce.

You place links or ads on your website. If one of your site visitors clicks on the link, goes through to a third party merchant site AND makes a purchase, you get paid a commission on the sale. Commissions vary depending on the value and quantity of products sold. For example an affiliate program for holidays may pay 2%, whereas a program for selling a downloadable ebook may pay 50%.

The biggest affiliate program in the world is run by Amazon?http://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/join?. Anyone can sign up and promote Amazon products in exchange for a commission on sales of between 4% and 10%.

There are also many affiliate networks which aggregate hundreds or thousands merchants. The biggest affiliate networks are:

There are many entrepreneurs on the internet making six figure incomes from running affiliate marketing websites.

Ecommerce

You can sell physical and digital products from your site.

Most content sites have the potential to make good revenue from selling ebooks, reports, white papers, research, podcasts and other downloadable products.

Many also sell physical goods which they both stock and ship themselves, or just take the orders for a third party merchant to fulfil.

To enable ecommerce you need to have a shopping cart and secure payment processing integrated into your content site.

The shopping cart enables buyers to select one or more items to buy and then takes them through the checkout process.

The payment processing can be done via a Payment Service Provider (PSP) which handles the whole transaction. The biggest PSP is PayPal. You could also consider using Google Checkout.

The alternative to a PSP is getting a merchant service account from your bank. The charges are often cheaper and the customer service much better. However you will need three services to make it work ? a shopping cart, a gateway ? which checks the shopper?s card is not stolen? and your merchant account.

Subscription

Charging access to premium content is one of the most profitable ways you can build a sustainable online business.

It is the equivalent of the traditional print newsletter or specialist magazine, with all the advantages that the web has to offer including audio and video content, forums, reader feedback, real-time updates and simple administration.

To create a successful subscription website you need to be able separate public and member content, capture and manage member?s personal data, issue passwords and process recurring payments. These capabilities should be fully automated so you don?t spend your life dealing with customer service issues.

Subscription is usually charged for access to premium content, but also can be for an online service.

Participation

Participation refers to activities where your website visitor becomes actively involved with you or your company.

These activities include webinars, tele-seminars, seminars, conferences, consultancy and mentoring. It could also include licensing products, franchising your services, or other creative ways of leveraging your audience.

Trust and Authority Equals More Money

The order that I have listed these revenue streams in is important.

As you move from advertising to participation the amount of money you can make increases. However the amount of money your website visitors will be willing to spend will depend on how much they trust you and the value they believe you can deliver.

Advertising requires the least commitment from visitors. You earn a small amount of revenue from each page they visit.

Affiliate marketing requires a little more trust as visitors will be buying based on your recommendations.

Ecommerce requires visitors to give you their personal details and trust you to deliver whatever they are buying.

For people to pay for a subscription they must not only trust you with their personal details and credit card information, but they must also believe you will deliver value for the term of the membership.

And participation means they are buying into you and your business. Courses, workshops and mentoring often mean they have to invest time, effort and money in working with you.

Conclusion

There are five ways to make money from a content website.

The most profitable websites have multiple revenue streams.

When you set up your online business you should explore all the possible money making opportunities and ensure that the website you build at the outset has the capability to continually add new ways of making money.

Your long-term, sustainable online success is dependant on you building a strong relationship with your audience and moving them from one revenue stream to the next.

Long-haul travel boosts illness risk for athletes: study

Could health explain Britain's stellar success in the Olympics and Australia's disappointment?

That is one of the questions arising from a new probe which says elite athletes who have to travel very long distances are nearly three times likelier to fall ill than when they play at home.

"What the results of this study emphasize is home advantage," says the lead author of the study, Professor Martin Schwellnus at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

"You have a healthier team when you are at home as opposed to when you are travelling, and so that can and must contribute to the performance eventually."

Schwellnus analysed cases of illness recorded among eight teams which took part in the 2010 Super 14 rugby tournament, a competition staged over four months in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Teams that were not playing on home soil had a time-zone difference of between two and 11 hours from their own.

During the tournament, team doctors logged 469 cases of illness -- defined as respiratory illness, gastro-intestinal sickness or skin infections -- in 187 of the 259 players. Playing injuries and other conditions did not fall into this category.

What was remarkable, said Schwellnus, was that the rate of illness varied hugely, depending on where the matches were played.

When a team played on home turf before they travelled abroad, incidence was 15.4 cases of illness for every 1,000 "player days," a unit of time.

This rose to a whopping 32.6 per thousand for matches played in locations that were more than five hours' time difference from home, regardless of the direction of travel.

For matches that were played on return back home after international travel, incidence fell back to a mere 10.6 cases per 1,000 player days, according to the study, published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Schwellnus said the illness risk did not lie with air travel.

If that were the case, rates of respiratory infection would have been equally high for outward and return trips.

The problem lies with adaptation to foreign conditions, he suggested.

Likely factors include differences in pollution, temperature and humidity and exposure to new allergens, kinds of food and germs.

The findings raise big questions for coaches, said Schwellnus.

Are they giving elite athletes enough time to adapt when they travel to distant competitions? And should they pinpoint players who could be more at risk than others?

"The assumption was that rates of illness would be highest in the first week that you are there, and that every week thereafter that it would get less," he said in a phone interview with AFP.

"But in fact that was not the case. Once you are in the country, and we followed the athletes up to five weeks in the foreign country, the risk of this illness was still high in the fourth or fifth week.

"I don't know how long you will need to adjust, but it's going to be longer than five weeks."

Schwellnus cautioned against those who dismissed the illnesses as a passing case of the snuffles.

"Some of them can lead to very serious medical complications, with viral infection of the cardiac muscle. In extreme cases, they can culminate in sudden death."

Asked to comment on the stark contrasts in success between Team GB and Australia in the London Games, Schwellnus said he was not privy to inside information on team health and management.

But he said he would not be surprised if the travel distance played a part.

"The fact that they (the Australians) have come from far away and the fact that they have to travel a very long distance, from south to north and also from east to west, perhaps makes a difference."

Google FTC Fine - Business Insider

Google is getting hit with a very light (for Google) penalty by the FTC for violating the privacy of Apple users.

According to the FTC, Google, "misrepresented to users of Apple Inc.?s Safari Internet browser that it would not place tracking 'cookies' or serve targeted ads to those users, violating an earlier privacy settlement between the company and the FTC."

As a result Google is paying a $22.5 million fine. For some context, Google generates that much cash just about every twelve hours.?

Here's the FTC's full press release:

Google Inc. has agreed to pay a record $22.5 million civil penalty to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it misrepresented to users of Apple Inc.?s Safari Internet browser that it would not place tracking ?cookies? or serve targeted ads to those users, violating an earlier privacy settlement between the company and the FTC.

The settlement is part of the FTC?s ongoing efforts make sure companies live up to the privacy promises they make to consumers, and is the largest penalty the agency has ever obtained for a violation of a Commission order. ?In addition to the civil penalty, the order also requires Google to disable all the tracking cookies it had said it would not place on consumers? computers. ?

?The record setting penalty in this matter sends a clear message to all companies under an FTC privacy order,? said Jon Leibowitz, Chairman of the FTC.? ?No matter how big or small, all companies must abide by FTC orders against them and keep their privacy promises to consumers, or they will end up paying many times what it would have cost to comply in the first place.?

Google, the developer of the world?s most popular Internet search engine, generates billions of dollars in revenues annually from selling online advertising services, including the delivery of targeted ads online. ?Cookies are small pieces of computer text that are used to collect information from computers and can be used to serve targeted ads to consumers.? By placing a tracking cookie on a user?s computer, an advertising network can collect information about the user?s web-browsing activities and use that information to serve online ads targeted to the user?s interests or for other purposes.

In its complaint, the FTC charged that for several months in 2011 and 2012, Google placed a certain advertising tracking cookie on the computers of Safari users who visited sites within Google?s DoubleClick advertising network, although Google had previously told these users they would automatically be opted out of such tracking, as a result of the default settings of the Safari browser used in Macs, iPhones and iPads.?

According to the FTC?s complaint, Google specifically told Safari users that because the Safari browser is set by default to block third-party cookies, as long as users do not change their browser settings, this setting ?effectively accomplishes the same thing as [opting out of this particular Google advertising tracking cookie].? ?In addition, Google represented that it is a member of an industry group called the Network Advertising Initiative, which requires members to adhere to its self-regulatory code of conduct, including disclosure of their data collection and use practices.

Despite these promises, the FTC charged that Google placed advertising tracking cookies on consumers? computers, in many cases by circumventing the Safari browser?s default cookie-blocking setting.? Google exploited an exception to the browser?s default setting to place a temporary cookie from the DoubleClick domain.? Because of the particular operation of the Safari browser, that initial temporary cookie opened the door to all cookies from the DoubleClick domain, including the Google advertising tracking cookie that Google had represented would be blocked from Safari browsers.

The FTC charged that Google?s misrepresentations violated a settlement it reached with the agency in October 2011, which barred Google from ? among other things ? misrepresenting the extent to which consumers can exercise control over the collection of their information.? The earlier settlement resolved FTC charges that Google used deceptive tactics and violated its privacy promises when it launched its social network, Google Buzz.?

More information about the FTC case can be found at the Tech@FTC blog.

The Commission vote to authorize the staff to refer the complaint to the Department of Justice, and to approve the proposed consent decree, was 4-1 with Commissioner J. Thomas Rosch dissenting.? The Commission issued a statement authored by Chairman Jon Leibowitz and Commissioners Edith Ramirez, Julie Brill, and Maureen Ohlhausen. In its statement, the Commission affirmed that the settlement is in the public interest because, based on staff?s investigative work, there is strong reason to believe that Google violated the prior order, and the $22.5 million fine is an appropriate remedy for the charge that Google misrepresented to Safari browser users how to avoid targeted advertising by Google.? In his dissenting statement, Commissioner Rosch stated that it arguably cannot be concluded that the consent decree is in the public interest if it contains a denial of liability.

This case was filed with the invaluable assistance of the DOJ, which filed the complaint and proposed consent decree on behalf of the Commission in U.S. District Court for the District of Northern California in San Jose August 8, 2012. ?The proposed consent decree is subject to court approval.

Syrian prime minister defects, fighting goes on

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian forces pressed on with their offensive against rebels in the largest city Aleppo after the prime minister fled the country, denouncing the "terrorist regime" of Bashar al-Assad.

The defection of Riyad Hijab - who like most of the opposition hails from the Sunni Muslim majority - was a further sign of the isolation of Assad's government around an inner core of powerful members of his minority Alawite sect.

Opposition figures, buoyant despite setbacks in recent weeks of fighting around Damascus and Aleppo, spoke of an extensive and long-planned operation to spirit Hijab and his large extended family across the border to Jordan.

"I announce today my defection from the killing and terrorist regime and I announce that I have joined the ranks of the freedom and dignity revolution," Hijab said in a statement read by a spokesman on Al Jazeera television on Monday. He declared himself "a soldier in this blessed revolution".

A spokesman for U.S. President Barack Obama hailed Hijab's defection as a sign that the 40-year rule of Assad's family was "crumbling from within" and said he should step down.

Western leaders' repeated predictions of Assad's imminent collapse have so far proven premature, however.

The security forces have overwhelming superiority in firepower, which they have wielded against lightly armed rebels who poured into the two main cities, Damascus and Aleppo, in the past month.

The rebels gathered momentum last month, attempting to seize the two cities after an audacious bomb attack killed four members of Assad's inner circle. But a government counteroffensive has been devastating, with troops largely recapturing Damascus and using helicopters and tanks to hammer rebels who retain control of parts of Aleppo.

The war increasingly has divided the region along its sectarian faultline, pitting the mainly-Sunni rebels, who are backed by regional Sunni-led powers Turkey and the Gulf Arab states, against a government that is backed by Shi'ite Iran.

Iran has expressed worry over the fate of more than 40 Iranians Tehran says are religious pilgrims kidnapped by rebels off a bus in Damascus while visiting Shi'ite shrines.

The rebels say they suspect the captives were troops sent to aid Assad. A rebel spokesman in the Damascus area said on Monday three of the Iranians had been killed by government shelling, and the rest would be executed if the shelling did not stop.

Hijab's defection was the latest sign of Sunnis abandoning Assad, but there has been no sign yet that members of his mainly Alawite ruling inner circle are losing their will to fight on.

"Defections are occurring in all components of the regime save its hard inner core, which for now has given no signs of fracturing," said Peter Harling at the International Crisis Group think-tank.

"For months the regime has been eroding and shedding its outer layers, while rebuilding itself around a large, diehard fighting force," he said. "The regime as we knew it is certainly much weakened, but the question remains of how to deal with what it has become."

ALEPPO DISTRICT WHITE WITH DUST

Rebels in districts of Aleppo visited by Reuters journalists in recent days seemed battered, overwhelmed and running low on ammunition after days of intense shelling of their positions by tanks and heavy machinegun fire from helicopter gunships.

Syrian army tanks shelled alleyways where rebels sought cover as a helicopter gunship fired heavy machineguns. Snipers ran on rooftops targeting rebels. Women and children fled the city, some crammed in the back of pickup trucks, while others trekked on foot, heading to relatively safer rural areas.

The main focus of fighting in Aleppo has been the Salaheddine district. Once a busy shopping and restaurant district, it is now white with dust, broken concrete and rubble.

Tank shell holes gape wide on the top of buildings near the front line, and homes of families have been turned into look-outs and sniper locations for rebel fighters. Large mounds of concrete are used as barriers to close off streets. Lampposts lie horizontally across the road after being downed by shelling.

A bomb hit the Damascus headquarters of Syria's state broadcaster on Monday but injuries were minor and transmission continued.

LONDON (AP) ? All's fine with Kobe Bryant, and the gold medal hopes of the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team, too.

Bryant silenced his critics and broke open a tight game with six 3-pointers in the second half Wednesday night as the Americans advanced to the semifinals of the London Games with a 119-86 victory over Australia.

On a night when LeBron James had a triple-double, the story was Bryant's awakening from his Olympic slumber. The five-time NBA champion scored 20 points, flashing three fingers in the air after his third consecutive 3-pointer in the fourth quarter had pushed the game well out of reach and proved that he would indeed deliver the kind of game expected of him in London.

"I kind of knew what button to push with him. I was talking to him at halftime and in the third quarter and I guess I pushed the button. He woke up and to see that, I've been on the other side of the ball and had that situation before," teammate Carmelo Anthony said.

James finished with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists for the Americans, who advanced to their third straight Olympic semifinal meeting with Argentina, which beat Brazil earlier Wednesday. Deron Williams added 18 points, Anthony had 17 and Kevin Durant 14.

The Americans beat the Argentines 126-97 on Monday in the final game of pool play, yet another night they didn't need much from Bryant, who came in averaging just 9.4 points and hearing whispers that something must be wrong with him, though both he and his teammates kept assuring people there was no problem.

This time was different, and he delivered when he was needed most.

"Just kind of searching for something to get me going, for something that would activate the Black Mamba, as Coach calls it," Bryant said.

Australia scored the first 11 points of the second half, cutting the Americans' lead to three after back-to-back 3-pointers by Joe Ingles. The U.S. lead was only six before Bryant, who has never gotten in an offensive rhythm in London and just minutes earlier had committed another puzzling offensive foul, finally broke out.

He made a 3-pointer, then batted away a pass, chased it down along the left sideline and pulled up for another 3 that made it 70-58. James followed with a basket that pushed it to 14, and the Americans never let the Australians get much closer.

Not the way Bryant shot, anyway.

He finished 6 of 10 behind the arc, making three straight in the fourth quarter to blow it open, the crowd chanting "Kobe! Kobe!" before he finally missed on a ridiculously long attempt before calling it a night.

Patty Mills scored 26 points and Ingles had 19 for Australia, which had the misfortune of running into the U.S. in the quarterfinals for the second straight Olympics.

Even the Australian fans were cheering for Bryant as he walked to the locker room after a postgame interview. First, he knocked fists with the Aussies' kangeroo mascot, wearing boxing gloves on his hands.

Bryant sure knocked out the Australians.

Bodies fell and blood flowed in a physical first half, the Americans taking plenty of hits but delivering them as well, such as the one that sent Australia's David Barlow to the bench with a bloody nose that took a while to control.

But the spirited play brought out the best in Bryant, who insists he's content taking a lesser role with other, much younger scorers such as James, Durant and Anthony willing to carry the load.

He said the same things in Beijing and came through with 20 points in the gold-medal game, so the Americans know they can count on him to rise to a challenge.

They expect another one from Argentina, which beat the U.S. in 2004 on its way to the gold medal, a loss the Americans avenged before winning gold in Beijing.

Russia plays Spain in the other semifinal.

(This version CORRECTS U.S. 119, Australia 86. Corrects in second paragraph that 6 3-pointers in second half not made consecutively)
