Bob McDonnell: Republican Governors, Not Obama, Deserve Credit For Rising Economy

WASHINGTON -- Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said Sunday that Republican governors deserve credit for the improving economy.

"I'm glad the economy is starting to recover, but I think it's because of what Republican governors are doing in their states, not because of the president," McDonnell said on CNN's "State of the Union with Candy Crowley."

McDonnell did not elaborate on what the governors have done. But he said Republican governors are in charge of more states with positive economic conditions. "Eleven out of the top 15 states in America that are ranked by CNBC as top places to do business are Republican states," he said. "Seven out of the 10 states that have had the biggest drop in unemployment are states run by Republican governors."

The national unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent in January, the fifth consecutive month of decline and the 16th consecutive month the economy added jobs. But, as McDonnell noted, it's also the 36th straight month with the unemployment rate above 8 percent.

If governors in general have helped the economy, it hasn't been by keeping people on the payroll: State and local governments have laid off scads of workers over the past year. They employed 232,000 fewer workers last month than they did in January 2011, according to Labor Department data.

The unemployment rate in Virginia is 6.2 percent. Government payrolls there grew from 705,600 in December 2010 to 706,000 last December, according to the Labor Department (although that total likely includes some federal workers).

McDonnell, who is chairman of the Republican Governors Association and a backer of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in his race for the presidency, suggested the improving economy won't help President Barack Obama win reelection in November.

"This race is coming down to three things. It's leadership, it's jobs, and it's the national debt and deficit," McDonnell said. "And on all of those, President Obama's failed. He spends most of his time blaming Republicans and the Tea Party and Wall Street for all the problems in the country and not taking responsibility. He's completely failed to get the national debt and deficit under control. He's contributed nearly $5 trillion to the national debt with no plan to get out of it."

"Reuters and the World Economic Forum have much in common," writes the electronic news service's editor in chief, Stephen Adler. "We're both global in outlook, dedicated to generating insights that drive better, smarter decisions and committed to bringing together the world's most interesting people."

That's why, Adler explains in an editor's letter, Reuters has decided to produce a magazine specifically designed for the gabfest known as Davos. Called simply Reuters, the 64-page, ad-free glossy, which was distributed to attendees of this year's World Economic Forum, is chock-full of all the big-name bylines Reuters has been giddily collecting over the past few years? -- Chrystia Freeland, Bethany McLean, Sir Harold Evans, ?David Rohde, Jonathan Weber, to name just a few. Thumbing through it, you realize Reuters does indeed have something in common with Davos, though I'd put it differently, and perhaps less kindly, than Adler. What they share isn't just a dedication to "generating insights" and making smarter decisions, but the unshakable belief that if you bring together enough of the right people -- meaning those with the right titles, the right credentials, the right r?sum?s, aka, the elite -- in one place, you are guaranteed to accomplish great things.

Just listen to Jim Impoco, managing editor of the new pub, gush about the big-name talent behind it. (In addition to those listed above, journalistic luminaries including former Harper's Magazine editor Roger Hodge and the well-known design team of Priest + Grace can be found on the masthead.) "We assembled a sort of Navy Seal team to put it together," Impoco told Capital New York. "I used to be at Fortune, and if we'd had a line-up like that, we'd have been doing the happy dance all through the '90s."

I didn't realize they weren't doing the happy dance at Fortune in the '90s, nor that the magazine's lineup at the time consisted of chopped liver, but that's another story. Impoco, executive editor of Thomson Reuters Digital, also previously worked at The New York Times, and, it should be noted, Cond? Nast's short-lived Portfolio, which Capital New York points out is a former employer of at least four contributors to Reuters magazine. It's an interesting detail, given that much of the hype and high expectations that preceded Portfolio's launch was based on the oft-repeated belief that it had assembled a team of business journalism all-stars, as if that was enough to guarantee its success.

Of course, it wasn't, and Portfolio lasted only 21 issues. But the idea that if you snap up enough big names you'll succeed stubbornly persists, both at conferences like Davos and at ambitious media outlets like Reuters, where Adler, the last editor in chief of Businessweek before its sale to Bloomberg, seems to have enacted something of a full-employment act for marquee journalists. Reuters' archrival Bloomberg has also done its share of big-name hiring over the past couple of years -- David Shipley, Michael Kinsley, to name just two -- in addition to snapping up and relaunching Businessweek magazine as Bloomberg Businessweek. They may be electronic news services, but Bloomberg and Reuters both still believe in the power of print.

Still, the similarities seem to end there. Bloomberg Businessweek, which claims nearly fpour million readers, serves a mass business audience; Reuters magazine, by contrast, is unabashedly for the Davos set. That's an interesting group for a giant news service to target, given the current Zeitgeist and its mistrust of anything having to do with the 1%. But when it comes to Davos, it seems big-name journalists are happy to throw their hats in with the elite, whether that means flying off to Switzerland to rub elbows with CEOs as they frolic on Magic Mountain (in a recent column on Davos, The New York Times' Andrew Ross Sorkin wondered parenthetically, "When did elite become a pejorative term?") or producing a magazine whose cover story is about income inequality not among the masses, but among millionaires and billionaires, or as Reuters magazine put it, the haves and have lots.

As of now, it's not clear if Reuters magazine is just a one-off or not, though Impoco in Capital New York called it a "proof-of-concept exercise" to see if Reuters can "do a print product as part of our consumer-facing push." Consumer-facing? At Davos? Those are some big-name consumers.

DEA raids 2 CVS pharmacies in drug abuse probe (Reuters)

The DEA declined to discuss details of the raids, but it plans to hold a news conference at 3 p.m. EST (2000 GMT) on Monday "to announce the latest efforts by the Drug Enforcement Administration in its efforts to thwart the diversion of licit pharmaceutical controlled substances."

Controlled substances are those, like stimulants, painkillers and tranquilizers, that can be addictive. Every entity that handles a controlled substance, from the manufacturer to the distributor to the pharmacy to the physician, must register with the agency.

The DEA's action comes as Florida, like other states, battles an ever-rising tide of prescription drug abuse.

Cardinal said on Friday that the DEA had suspended its license based on suspiciously high volume at four pharmacies. The company told a judge that it had already stopped shipping to two of the pharmacies several months ago, and stopped shipping to the CVS stores, in Sanford, after its license was temporarily suspended on Friday morning.

CVS Caremark Corp said in an emailed statement that it was "disappointed that the DEA has taken an administrative action to prohibit two CVS/pharmacy stores in Florida from dispensing controlled substances.

"CVS/pharmacy is unwavering in its compliance with and support of the measures taken by federal and state law enforcement officials to prevent drug abuse and keep controlled substances out of the wrong hands."

CVS said that last fall, with the knowledge of the DEA, it had informed a small number of Florida physicians that it would no longer fill the prescriptions they write for controlled narcotics.

As a result, distributions of oxycodone to the two Florida stores have decreased by about 80 percent in the last three months from the prior three months, CVS said.

"We are cooperating with the DEA in regard to the administrative action," the company said. "Meanwhile, we remain committed to ensuring that all our customers, including customers of the two pharmacies, get the medications they need, including controlled substances."
