Daily Motivational Quote for 11/30/2012.

MY FRIDAY STORY

FAITH AND LOSS
By Kristie Phillips

I lost my innocence on April 25, 2006, two days after my 34th birthday.

I woke up that morning with hope and more faith than I had ever had in my life. With a quiet confidence that I had prayed with my whole heart and God had heard me, and He would help my family and me in our time of need. But what did God actually do? Nothing. My Mom died that morning. She was 60 years old. I went to bed that night numb with shock, but with my eyes wide open.

Mom?s loss was sudden, complications from a surgery that had seemed to go well. She was released from the hospital four days after the surgery and was recovering on schedule. Then she started having pain, and before anyone, my dad, the surgeon, or even she herself realized how bad her condition was, she collapsed and never woke up again.

The surgeon told us he didn?t know what happened. Usually if a patient has pain or complications, there is time to diagnose the problem and treat it, but my mom deteriorated so fast, there was no time. We finally concluded that God just took her. There was no other explanation.

The day I lost my Mom, I lost my faith as well. I never thought I would have an easy life with no problems, but I had firmly believed my entire life that God would hear my prayers and answer them. Growing up I heard so many stories about God miraculously making illnesses disappear, healing people against all odds, and answering impossible prayers, that I couldn?t understand why He wouldn?t do that for my family. I was terribly disappointed and angry with God. I refused to pray any more at all.

I never told anybody how much I hated God. I was afraid my Christian friends would argue with me and quote scriptures about how all things work together for good and how God will never fail us nor forsake us, and that?s not what I needed to hear since I felt that God had failed me.

A few weeks before Mom?s death, in early April before we even knew about her surgery, I had noticed an 8-week continuing education class on Grief and Loss, offered by the local community college. It was a new class and stood out among the computer, hobby, and self-improvement offerings. Although I felt drawn to the class, I did not register because I felt strange going when I had not experienced a loss myself. Little did I know that a few weeks later I would have plenty of experience.

I returned to work a week after Mom?s funeral and signed up for the Grief and Loss class, still unsure of whether I should go. Somehow I showed up. I had nothing else to do. And in the back of my mind, I couldn?t help but wonder if this was God providing for me after all. The instructor, Nancy Murphy, was patient?s advocate who worked with the elderly in nursing homes and who had a desire to help people understand death and grief. She had lost two of her brothers as children, a third brother when she was sixteen, and her father a year-and-a-half before.

The three other students in the class included a large black man who had recently become a pastor; his wife, who had lost her grandmother, her mother, and her sister all to breast cancer; and a small 20-something former heroin addict, whose teenage sister had committed suicide when she was thirteen. They were not the kind of people I would normally associate with, but they understood the loss I was going through and I found the class to be very comforting.

Nancy was so kind to me and stayed late after every class to talk to me and see how I was doing. We would stand in the parking lot for half an hour after class talking. Nancy told me the class might be too early for me, too soon after my loss. Many adult children who lose their parents don?t fully feel the impact of the loss for months, and they tend to join support groups months later instead of right away.

But, I think the class was exactly what I needed at the time. The class gave me direction, gave me people who understood what I was going through, and led me to some books to read that gave me a greater understanding of grief. Without the class, I would have been lost and unprepared to deal with what I was feeling.

The funny part is that a continuing education class would normally be canceled if it had less than six students. This had happened to me several times in the past. But somehow, this Grief and Loss class was allowed to run with just four students. I think it was because Nancy was so enthusiastic to teach it that the coordinator at the community college made an exception.

A year later, in August 2007, I saw Nancy Murphy again in a restaurant at lunchtime. She was as sweet and kind as she had been the year before. She told me that she had not taught the class again; she had gotten busy with work and in the future would try to target the class to healthcare workers. I tried to explain to her that the class was perfect timing for me and exactly what I needed. She said the class helped her as much as it had helped us.

How can you tell the difference between coincidence and God providing for you? I like to think that God provided that Grief and Loss class just for me. I would have been very apprehensive about going to a grief support group and probably would never have gotten the help I needed. But classes I?m not afraid of. I have a Ph.D. I?ve gone to lots of classes. Nancy Murphy said that she has to believe there is a purpose in loss. She has to. That?s the only way she can make sense of it and have some peace. And I think she?s right.

My faith is coming back slowly, little by little, but I know it will never be the same. I will never believe like I once did. I will never be as faithful, innocent, and naive as I was before. I will always remember how God disappointed me. I can only hope that God has a plan and a purpose for my life after all and my mom?s death was a part of it. And when I doubt, I think about Nancy Murphy, her kindness, and her Grief and Loss class that only ran at the exact time I really needed it, and I wonder.

German lawmakers approve Greek bailout despite qualms

BERLIN (Reuters) - German lawmakers approved the latest bailout for Greece on Friday by a large majority despite growing unease about the cost to taxpayers less than a year before federal elections.

The outcome of the vote in the lower house was never in doubt but it was a test of Angela Merkel's authority over her center-right coalition. She did not manage to draw an absolute majority from her own ranks after 23 of her lawmakers rebelled.

But with the main opposition Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens voting in favor with most of Merkel's bloc, the revolt had only symbolic value. Of 584 deputies present in the chamber, 473 voted for the bailout and 100 voted against.

The parliamentary floor leader of Merkel's Christian Democrats, Michael Grosse-Broemer, said he was happy with the result of the vote, adding: "Greece must now continue its efforts to reduce its debts and carry out structural reforms."

The package, which aims to cut Greece's debt load to 124 percent of national output by 2020, coincides with increased talk among German lawmakers and media that euro zone governments will eventually have to write off much of their Greek debt.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said in the Bundestag debate that such speculation could undermine the Greek government's reform drive.

"If we say the debts will be written off (Greece's) willingness to make savings is correspondingly weakened. Such false speculation does not solve the problems," he said. "A Greek bankruptcy could lead to the break-up of the euro zone."

The government acknowledged for the first time this week that the bailout will mean lost federal revenues.

All week, German newspapers have reverberated with predictions, including from some coalition lawmakers, that Germany and other euro zone countries will eventually have to write off some of their Greek debt holdings.

Schaeuble said Germany was insisting on strict monitoring of Greece's reforms to ensure it met its fiscal targets, adding that the country's competitiveness was finally improving as a result of the austerity program.

REBELS

Criticism of the Greek bailouts within Merkel's coalition has softened in recent months after she decided the cost of expelling Greece from the euro zone would be far greater.

The SPD has accused the government of deceiving German voters by insisting that no further write-down's of Greek debt will be necessary, but it is difficult for the strongly pro-euro center-left party to make political capital out of this issue.

Merkel's policy of talking tough on austerity in Greece and other heavily indebted euro zone countries while making the necessary concessions to avert a messy default commands broad support in Germany, where the chancellor is as popular as ever.

"We will vote for it because we don't want our reliability as European partners left in any doubt. It has nothing to do with the government," Peer Steinbrueck, the SPD's candidate for chancellor in next year's election, said during Friday's debate.

SPD parliamentary leader Frank-Walter Steinmeier accused the government of putting off the "economically unavoidable" debt haircut for Greece for its own political reasons.

"You can postpone it until after Christmas, until after the Lower Saxony election, the Bavarian election or the federal elections, but it will come."

DEAR ABBY: My wife and I have been married for five years. I recently discovered that she made between 10 and 20 porn videos when she was 19. We got married when she was 27. We have four kids from two previous marriages.I am devastated. When I confronted her about it, she cried harder than I had ever seen. She said she was lost, and it's the biggest regret of her entire life.I understand how hard it can be to tell someone you have done something like this. UN Climate Talks Roundup: Credit Surplus, Finance Showcase ...

Here is the latest news from the United Nations? climate talks in Doha, Qatar, where representatives from nearly 200 countries are working on a second round of pledges to reduce emissions ahead of the Kyoto Protocol?s expiration.

Carbon Market Watch, Greenpeace, International Rivers, WWF International and more than 150 other NGOS have urged delegates at the UN climate talks to increase emissions reduction commitments and cancel surplus carbon credits. The massive surplus of Assigned Amount Unit (AAU) credits used by countries to meet their carbon goals threatens the viability of a second commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol, the NGOs said in an open letter.? The group also asked the UN to reform the Clean Development Mechanism and to ban offset credits from fossil fuel-based projects.

The?World Economic Forum?and United Nations Climate Change secretariat announced the creation of an initiative showcasing successful public-private finance mechanisms and approaches to support climate change adaption and mitigation. The initiative, called Momentum for Change: Innovative Financing for Climate-friendly Investment, will inform governments, investors, business, public finance agencies and the media about?practical ways to shift to environmentally and economically sustainable growth. It will be formally launched December 6.

Cities in developing countries have an important, but closing, window of opportunity to take action to develop policies to protect themselves from environmental risks and resource scarcities caused by surging population and climate hazards, according to a UK government-backed report prepared by engineering consultancy Atkins, the?Department of International Development and University College London. ?Future Proofing Cities,? a report looking at the risks and opportunities for inclusive urban growth in developing countries, found cities account for up to 80 percent of energy consumption and 75 percent of carbon emissions. Cities in developing countries will be at the front line of managing infrastructure, environmental, energy and resource challenges given that 75 percent of the world?s population will live in cities by 2050 and 95 percent of this urban expansion is projected to take place in the developing world, the report said.

Sea levels have been rising by 3.2 mm per year for the last 30 years, 60 percent faster than the 2 mm per year rise projected by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, according to research published in the journal Environmental Research Letters. The study, which used satellite technology, said if the trend continues sea levels could rise by 9 mm per year within a century, The Telegraph reported.

The years 2001 to 2011 were among the warmest on record and the first 10 months indicate 2012 will likely be no exception, despite the cooling influence of La Ni?a, according to the provisional annual statement from the World Meteorological Organization. The global land and ocean surface temperature from January to October 2012 was about 0.45 degrees Celsius above the 1961-1990 average of 14.2 C, the WMO said. The WMO highlighted the unprecedented melt of Arctic sea ice and multiple weather and climate extremes, which caused flooding, drought and wildfires through many parts of the world.

The #1 Secret of Great Value Investors

What if you could invest in a company that's not only undervalued but has the possibility of big growth?

I know what you're thinking. It's nearly impossible to find those stocks.

It's the "holy grail" of investing: a value stock that also has growth.

But here's a little secret that all great value investors know:

These holy grail stocks do exist.

And no, they're not some $1 stock with little volume or other risky fundamentals that are traded on an over-the-counter exchange. They are companies that you and I both know, but are, for whatever reason, being ignored by other investors.

Now that we know what the holy grail of investing is, how do we find them?

The #1 Secret is the PEG Ratio

Value investors have long looked to the price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) as a screen for value stocks. A low P/E ratio is believed to signify that a company is undervalued.

But that's not the only metric that signals value.

Benjamin Graham, long considered to be the "father" of value investing, found that a low price-to-earnings ratio wasn't enough to unearth the true undervalued companies. He looked to the PEG ratio instead, which combines both value and growth; a more potent combination.

The PEG ratio is calculated by taking the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio and dividing it by the 5-year projected growth rate.

Confused yet?

These days you don't really need to figure it out yourself. Most financial web sites, including Zacks.com, provide the PEG ratio for you as a screening criterion when looking for stocks.

Value Stocks: When to Hold, When to Fold?

How can you confidently stay aboard a long-term, rising value stock while others are jumping off for lesser profits? Today, you can share a Zacks secret for knowing when to hold and when to fold.

Also discover the Exxons and Apples of the future, and how to pursue them for gains of +50%, +100%, and possibly much more. Your deadline for a special opportunity is fast approaching.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What's a Good PEG Ratio?

A company that is considered fairly valued will have a P/E ratio that equals its growth rate. So the PEG will equal 1.0.

A more expensive stock will be above 1.0.

Normally, a stock with a PEG ratio under 1.0 is considered "undervalued" as that means the market is underestimating the earnings, and/or it is growing faster than expected.

So, that's what you should be looking for when you see the PEG ratio. You want a ratio under 1.0.

How the PEG Ratio Really Works

1) You could have a company with a P/E ratio of 30 and a projected growth rate of 15%. This company clearly doesn't look like it's undervalued with a P/E ratio that high. You would be right. Plugging it into the formula, you get 30/15 = PEG of 2.0. Since 2.0 is above 1.0, it is considered an expensive stock.

2) Let's say you have a company with a P/E ratio of 40 and a projected growth rate of 50%. With a P/E of 40, it clearly seems to be a bad value. However, plugging it into the formula gives you a PEG ratio of 0.8 (40/50= 0.8). Since that is under 1.0, it is considered undervalued. The incredible growth rate counters the high P/E ratio.

3) In our third example, a company with a P/E ratio of 10, which is well within the value parameters for most investors and is usually considered pretty cheap, has a growth rate of just 7%. Putting it into the formula gets a PEG ratio of 1.43 (10/7= 1.43), which is much too high to be considered undervalued despite the company's rather low P/E.

Finding the Best Values

Instead of going it alone to find the values, we do the work for you. We offer a service that combines the most powerful value criteria like the PEG ratio with the timeliness of the Zacks Rank. It's a great way to catch value stocks at the right time ? just as the market begins to recognize their real worth.

Today, in fact, our Value Investor portfolio includes 22 stocks that are "on sale," trading well below where they are likely to head in months and years to come.

What's more, I am getting ready to pull the trigger on new recommendations, and you will have the opportunity to climb aboard at the ground floor for the full ride upward. This is a value service, so I am glad to report that you can receive a substantial discount until Tuesday, December 4.

Charter School Proponents To Announce Major Focus On Shutting Down Failing Schools

Charter schools are about to get a reality check.

As someone who has observed the breakneck pace of the growing charter school movement up close, Greg Richmond, who leads the National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA), is taking a step back.

"We didn't start this movement in order to create more failing schools, but that's what we have," Richmond told The Huffington Post. "Hundreds of them."

On Wednesday morning, Richmond will join New Jersey Schools Commissioner Chris Cerf and California charter schools advocate Jed Wallace at Washington D.C.'s National Press Club to announce a new campaign, "One Million Lives," that aims to crack the whip on the duds.

The campaign will focus on getting states to adopt rules that make failing charter schools close automatically, hold charter authorizers accountable for their schools' performance, and revamp their authorizing bodies so they become more professional. Initial allies include organizations and philanthropies that have, until now, focused on growth -- rather than quality -- in the charter sector.

Charter schools are publicly funded but independently run, and often admit students via lottery. Proponents such as the Obama administration advocate for charter schools in the belief that educational opportunity should not depend on zip code, and that running schools without regulations -- without district-imposed curricula or mandatory union representation -- gives schools more room to innovate and succeed, unencumbered by bureaucracy.

But critics have long claimed that the schools siphon money away from public schools, and a steady stream of evidence has shown that, on average, charter schools do not outperform traditional public schools. NACSA found that between 900 and 1,300 charter schools are performing within the lowest 15 percent of schools within their state.

Because of results like this, some say an initiative like One Million Lives is long overdue. About a year ago, several charter school supporters told HuffPost that the movement needed to check itself, since it would be hard for politicians to continue advocating for funding these schools without definitive results, and with so many underperforming schools continuing to operate.

"We've been talking about this for a number of years and still there are hundreds of failing schools in the country," Richmond said. "We have to switch gears from the rhetoric and make it reality."

Most recently, he added, education policymakers have been concerned with low charter school closure rates. According to his organization's survey, two years ago, 12 percent of charter schools up for renewal were shuttered; the next year, that number fell to 6 percent. These numbers were particularly startling because they indicate that charter schools aren't holding up their end of the bargain: namely, increased flexibility in exchange for more accountability. New survey findings released Wednesday, it should be noted, show that the rate increased the following year.

Most notably, philanthropic groups that have attracted citicism for supporting massive charter growth -- a move that often has them accused of "destroying public education," as Richmond put it -- are getting behind the cause. Richmond said the initiative has significant support from the Gates, Walton, Robertson and Dell foundations.

Other initial allies include Cerf, who, in a statement, said the focus on closures "is precisely what the exchange of autonomy for accountability means -- the core idea inherent in charter schools."

Michelle Rhee, a former Washington, D.C. schools chancellor, also praised the campaign.

"If we are going to really help kids succeed, every school entrusted with public money ... must be held accountable to the families they serve and the taxpayer for high standards and achievement,"?Rhee said.?"We need to promote better authorizer practices and stronger state policies to achieve a higher quality of charter schools and, at the same time, set clear protocols for closing chronically failing schools."

But even as the campaign launches, some states appear to be continuing down a path that prioritizes charter school growth over quality, threatening to create legions of new underperforming schools. The Michigan state legislature is currently weighing a bill that would expand charter schools further by allowing basically anyone to start one of these schools, with few safeguards for quality or experience.

"It provides no assurance of quality," said Amber Arellano, who heads the nonpartisan advocacy group EdTrust Midwest. "This is a reckless gamble that threatens the very future of our students."

School of Rock: An Interview with Scott Walton ? UC San Diego ...

In the words of Neil Young, rock and roll can never die. But to find out how it was born, look no further than MUS-40060: History of Rock Music. The online course takes you on a journey through the history of America?s most defining art form, examining how society has shaped the genre throughout the years ? and vice versa. Geared toward musicians and non-musicians alike,?History of Rock Music urges students to make valuable connections between rock music and their own culture.

We checked in with UC San Diego professor Scott Walton to discuss the course, the art of rebellion, and the ways in which rock and roll continues to impact our daily lives.

Q: What was it that drew you to teaching about the history of rock music?

Scott: In high school I was in several rock and blues bands and was completely absorbed with that music. So I?ve always had an interest, and as an educator, teaching rock history is not only a wonderfully engaging topic, but it?s also easy to connect musical developments with socio-political trends.

Q: How will History of Rock Music use the online medium to complement its subject matter?

Scott: Online teaching platforms such as Blackboard provide wonderful tools for sharing and collaboration. In an online setting, students are often more comfortable expressing opinions and engaging in in-depth conversations with their classmates, compared to a large, face-to-face lecture classroom setting. The lecture notes are PDF-based, and once students download the files from our course Blackboard website, they?ll have a useful resource rich with images, links to various websites, and streaming links to audio and video clips.

Q: Rebellion is a key theme of your course. How has rebellion manifested itself in rock and roll throughout the years?

Scott: Almost all popular music in the U.S. over the past century has served as a site for social or political resistance at some point. Early blues musicians were pushing back at Jim Crow, jazz musicians in the ?30s were instrumental in desegregating the entertainment industry, and when rock emerged in the 1950s it was resisting the comfortable Eisenhower-era notions of American life. Everything opened up in the ?60s with rock and soul musicians playing central roles in the civil rights movement, antiwar protests, and the sexual revolution. Activists viewed music as one of the most important emblems of their resistance to mainstream society.

Q: Do you think rock still has the power to affect social and political change?

Scott: I believe it does. One only has to look at the role musicians and actors played in the last presidential election, supporting presidential candidates and helping to get out the vote. Having Bruce Springsteen perform at a political rally gets a whole lot more people out to hear a message!

Q: The phrase ?rock is dead? gets tossed around a lot. Do you agree with it?

Scott: People also say that jazz is dead. You can only make a statement like that if you think way too much, and listen way too little.? :-)

Discover the musical, historical, and cultural context of this 20th century American art form and how it?s shifted our political and social attitudes as a nation over the decades in this engaging online course starting January 14th. Make sure to enroll on or before December 10th to receive a $25 discount off of the registration fee.

Red Dawn Movie Review | Entertainment | Know your city

Director:?Dan Bradley

Cast:?Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Connor Cruise, Jeffrey Dean Morgan

b! Says:?**1/2

Red Dawn is a Junior Expendables movie in disguise

?Red Dawn? is a mindless entertainer, featuring plenty of coming-of-age beefcake and boom boom. Think of it as a Junior Expendables ? where aeging, alpha superstars are replaced with pimply teenagers doing what they do best ? huff and puff till they make a million teenage girls feel faint. The movie may prove a little too ?pretty boy? for fans of the original 1984 movie, but it?s still a fun ride.

A sleepy American town receives a nasty jolt when the North Koreans launch a surprise invasion. As enemy paratroopers fall from the skies, a bunch of youngsters manage to escape arrest. The group consists of jaded marine (Chris Hemsworth), his love interest (Adrianne Palicki), his little brother (Josh Peck) and others (Josh Hutcherson, Connor Cruise, Steve Lenz). As more refugees add to their group and some see their parents brutally murdered, the gang christen themselves the Wolverines and decide to fight back, in the hope that more will rebel and overthrow Korean rule.

The movie has as many adrenaline filled moments as it does those that will make you roll your eyes. These kids might be at war, but still find time to make goo-goo eyes at each other and even break out the beer to celebrate a bloody skirmish. There are lapses in logic aplenty and in true Hollywood fashion, the first casualties of the group are black and Hispanic characters (Connor Cruise lasts a little longer and he probably has to thank celebrity parents, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, for it). Still, some of the renegade attacks and the invasion sequence (see video below) are well played out and with a running time of less than two hours, it?s ends before turning intolerable.

As for the actors, Hemsworth hasn?t seemed to have shaken off his Asgardian accent yet, but still makes for a dishy ringleader. The other stars (read: teenage pin-up sensations), that include Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) and Peck (Drake & Josh), are less impressive.

?Red Dawn? will please action buffs with low standards. The rest had best stay away.

How to Start Feeding Wild Birds in Your Yard ? Eagle Hardware ...

How to Start Feeding Wild Birds in Your Yard

cardinal How to Start Feeding Wild Birds in Your YardHere are proven tips and techniques to help you quickly enjoy beautiful wild birds found around your home.

Most birdfeeders are designed to attract a wide variety of wild bird species but some have features which appeal to certain species such as Goldfinches and woodpeckers. An excellent feeder design to start with is a ?hopper? feeder with wide ledges which presents black-oil sunflower seeds for big and small birds already living around your backyard. This approach ensures that you will attract beautiful wild birds quickly by using the seeds they prefer.

Bird-feeding tips:

Place your feeder so you can view it from a favorite room or chair. Think of a picture window, deck railing, patio, comfortable armchair or breakfast table. Some feeders are designed to attach to your window pane.

Your birds also need to enjoy where your feeder is placed so make sure it?s near plant or tree cover for protection from the weather and safety, yet easily found too.

Take an old, white t-shirt or towel and place it on the ground beneath your feeder (whether mounted on a pole or hanging from a hook or branch). Take a handful of black-oil sunflower seeds and sprinkle them on your ?target?. Birds follow other birds? feeding patterns so when the first bird finds these seeds, you and your feeder are in business!

Re-fill your feeder as often as necessary to encourage your backyard birds to enjoy your feeder every day too.

Get ready for your family to enjoy lots of natural fun! ?

Microsoft Reportedly Planning OS X-Style Cheap, Annual Windows Updates

Windows 8 LogoMicrosoft might be figuring out that the best way to get users to use its product isn't by charging an arm and a leg for updates and releasing them only once every few years. Redmond is reportedly switching to an approach like that taken by rival Apple, delivering inexpensive, annual updates that are less dramatic but which are designed to get all users on board a unified platform.

Russia's Cossacks start patrolling Moscow streets

MOSCOW (AP) ? Renowned for their sword-fighting prowess and notorious for their anti-Semitism in czarist Russia, the Cossacks are taking on new foes: beggars, drunks and improperly parked cars.

With the approval of city authorities, eight Cossacks clad in traditional fur hats and uniforms patrolled a Moscow train station on Tuesday looking for signs of minor public disturbances.

The Kremlin is seeking to use the once-feared paramilitary squads in its new drive to promote conservative values and appeal to nationalists.

The southern Krasnodar province ? which includes Sochi, the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics ? launched Cossack patrols in September to crack down on Muslim migrants from the neighboring Caucasus. Now they've made it to the Russian capital.

Cossacks trace their history in Russia back to the 15th century. Serving in the czarist cavalry, they spearheaded imperial Russia's expansion in exchange for special privileges, including the right to govern their own villages. In the 2010 census, about 650,000 Russians declared themselves Cossacks.

Tuesday's patrol was a test run on whether the group can become an armed and salaried auxiliary police force, with the power of arrest, patrol leader Igor Gulichev said.

He compared his forces to the Texas Rangers, the elite law-enforcement body in the U.S. state.

"They are just like Cossacks, and they work for the government, but they're welcomed with open arms. How come this should be allowed in America, but not in Russia, with our rich Cossack traditions? We're like Chuck Norris!" Gulichev said, in reference to the cult karate-kicking star of the television series "Walker, Texas Ranger."

Gulichev's group, which he said numbers up to 85, has patrolled southwestern Moscow with police approval for the past year, and has brought about 35 arrests. They are unpaid but receive free public transport passes and uniforms. Tuesday's patrol was the first in central Moscow.

The conservative Cossacks have increased their political activity in response to an impromptu protest that feminist punk rockers Pussy Riot staged in Moscow's main cathedral in February. Groups of Cossacks recently barred visitors from entering a Moscow art exhibition that daubed Pussy Riot's trademark balaclavas over Orthodox Christian icons, and they led a successful campaign to cancel a staging of Vladimir Nabokov's racy novel "Lolita" in St. Petersburg.

A government-backed Cossack political party held its first congress in Moscow this weekend. Communists have called it a cheap attempt to siphon pensioners' support from their party, which is widely known by the same acronym. Six other groups have applied to form splinter Cossack parties.

Gulichev, whose official title is deputy ataman, a Turkic word meaning commander, said he expected his group's responsibilities would soon expand to fighting drug trafficking and terrorism, mirroring the special relationship Cossacks had with the czars. "Cossacks have always been on the frontiers of the Russian empire, fighting foes and adversaries, illegal immigration ? repulsing raids, as people say today," he added.

Tuesday's modest effort lasted barely more than an hour and yielded few rewards. Without the police supervisor that Russian law requires to oversee volunteer deputies, the Cossacks drove away two elderly beggars, an old woman selling dried wild mushrooms and one unlicensed trading stall before piling into a bus. The stall was back selling socks within hours.

City authorities later distanced themselves from the Cossack patrol, even though officials had announced it widely the day before. Moscow's central district administration and the city Cossack committee released a joint statement denying they had authorized the patrol and saying that the Cossacks did not have the authority to crack down on unlicensed traders or badly parked cars.

Gulichev later told the Interfax news agency that the Cossacks had been hampered by the several dozen journalists who arrived to cover the patrol. The Cossacks spent most of their time giving interviews or aimlessly milling around the square, and only began their battle against public disturbances after reporters from Russian state television desperately begged them to do something on camera.

President Vladimir Putin was inducted into what is known as the Cossack host in 2005 and given the rank of Cossack colonel, previously held by imperial czars.

Russia plans to restore the functions Cossacks had in the imperial Russian army, where they were instrumental in repelling Napoleon's invading army in 1812 and led pogroms against Jews. A 400,000-strong All-Russia Cossack Host directly subordinate to Putin is scheduled to be launched by the end of the year.

Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking by Kelli and Peter Bronski New ...

Here is your one-stop shop for gluten-free cooking and baking. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner ? you're covered. In Artisanal Gluten-Free Cooking, Kelli and Peter Bronski give us a collection of recipes that prove beyond a doubt that going gluten-free doesn't mean sacrificing favorite foods or great flavor.

Quick Facts

? Who wrote it: Kelli and Peter Bronski

? Who published it: The Experiment

? Number of recipes: 275

? Recipes for right now: French Toast Casserole, Cinnamon Rolls, Pigs in a Blanket, Meat Lovers' Lasagna, Cider Bacon Chicken, Brussels Sprouts and Tofu Fried Rice, Frosted Sugar Cookies, Coconut Macaroons, Pumpkin Pie, Dessert Crepes

? Other highlights: When suddenly faced with a gluten-free diet, it's easy to feel like your food options have shrunk down to a handful of uninspiring dishes. Kelli and Peter Bronski dismiss that notion entirely, providing recipe after recipe as evidence to the contrary. Not only do they give the anticipated gluten-free versions of breads, cookies, and cakes, but they include dozens of meals and desserts that are naturally gluten-free.

For all of their gluten-free baking recipes, the authors use their favorite all-purpose blend of brown rice flour, sorghum flour, cornstarch, potato starch, potato flour, and xanthan gum. They suggest mixing up a big batch and using this blend for everything from sandwich bread to pie crust.

I also appreciate how the authors point out in each recipe which ingredients need to be double-checked for gluten. Someone who is newly gluten-free or who isn't used to cooking for people on a gluten-free diet wouldn't necessarily think to check things like bacon or chicken broth for gluten. This book helps ease us into the gluten-free mindset when cooking.

? Who would enjoy this book? People on a gluten-free diet, especially people who are new to the diet.

Evolutionary mode routinely varies amongst morphological traits within fossil species lineages

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? What happens when the modern evolutionary theory of punctuated equilibrium collides with the older theory of mosaic evolution? Part of the answer comes from a new, wide-ranging study by paleobiologists Melanie J Hopkins at the Museum fuer Naturkunde Berlin and Scott Lidgard at the Field Museum in Chicago. Their results are published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

While processes of evolution are largely studied by observation and experiment in the living world, evolutionary tempo and mode -- rates and patterns of change, respectively -- are mostly revealed by studying the fossil record. Paleontologists measure parts of the hard skeletal fossil remains of once-living organisms that they believe best represent the morphology, or form, of those organisms. They then analyze the variation in these traits through successive layers of rock that were laid down over longs spans of geologic time in order to determine the tempo and mode of species evolution. Punctuated equilibrium postulates that most evolutionary change takes place in relatively short periods of time during the origination of new species, while species themselves mostly undergo stasis, or little change, over longer periods. Several recent studies have indicated that stasis is much more common than gradual directional change in the fossil record. Mosaic evolution, on the other hand, is the tendency for different parts within species to evolve in different ways or at different rates.

The new study is based on data taken from hundreds of sequences of fossil samples previously reported in the scientific literature, but uses model selection methods available only in the last several years. The researchers compared models describing different modes of change, namely stasis, random change, and directional change, to each fossil series and found that different traits generally showed different, conflicting evolutionary modes within the same species. Many kinds of life were represented, including mammals, fish, mollusks, arthropods, and single-celled organisms. This large comparative study validates the ubiquity of mosaic evolution. However, it also raises questions about the evidence for different evolutionary modes, since the great majority of previous studies that quantify stasis, punctuated equilibrium, and gradual or "random" patterns in the fossil record are based on measurements of single traits, not on combined analyses of many traits. Further research will be required to establish the underlying processes driving the patterns of mosaic evolution and fossil species change. Nonetheless, the study is an excellent example of an emerging revolution in scientific inquiry as new techniques are used to breathe new life into old data.

Get Off the Couch! - Health X Pert Articles

Summer days are meant for active outdoor adventures, but when the days turn short and the weather chilly, you can be excused for wanting to curl up on the couch with a mug of tea rather than work up a sweat. But maintaining a fitness routine is especially important during the season of comfort foods and nonstop holiday parties. If your workout routine has seen better days, here are five ways to recommit to your workout. Dress the part: If your workout includes a pre- or post-work gym stop, then you?ll be more motivated to stick with your plans if you dress in comfy, easily changeable Winter clothes. Wear boots with zippers, comfy trousers, or thick tights so getting your street clothes on and off isn?t a battle. If the thought of putting on a thick wooly sweater after a sweaty workout has you discouraged, then wear a sweat-wicking top that doubles as a work one either underneath or in lieu of it. These gym clothes you can wear to work are stylish enough for the office ? and wearing them helps you encourage yourself to make it to the gym. Go in the morning: It?s freezing and dark outside after work, so it?s no wonder you?ve been convincing yourself to seek refuge at home instead of braving the elements. But if your reluctance to work out at night has turned your workout routine from regular to nonexistent, then now?s the time to switch your evening workout to the morning. The sunlight and fresh air will wake you up, and taking advantage of the early-morning daylight will help motivate you to stick to your routine. Get the right gear: If the thought of exercising outside this Winter gives you a chill straight to your bones, then remember this: the right gear helps make outdoor workouts comfortable and fun. For tips on what to buy and how to dress so you?re warm at the start of your workout but not overheated as your heart rate rises, read our tips on what to wear during cold-weather runs . Read on for more tips!

You will have a possibility to observe how much you be entitled to before accepting any bank loan agreement.

There is an essential legal big difference from the gift and also a loan. A very generous family member as well as buddy may offer you $5000 with regard to vehicle repairs, for instance. When there's no expectation of repayment, the amount of money can be viewed a present. The provider couldn't file suit with regard to payment later within a city match. However, if the borrowed funds supplier designates the amount of money like a loan as well as the customer will pay back a buck, the cash can be viewed as a legitimate loan as well as the loan company can demand repayment whenever. Small statements legal courts invest much of period determining whether a transaction which includes money would be a present or even bank loan. For that reason papers is very important when designing personal financial loans in order to good friends or even relatives.

Money lending products tend to be unprotected lending products eliminated upon the following salary. Since they're short-term financial loans, they could be little; various from $100 to $1500 as well as payment comes to the next pay day. They could be very helpful regarding conquering a quick monetary urgent situation, but really should not be viewed as a long-term financial option.

They may use a variety of criteria to determine if the potential customer is actually skilled for a financial loan. Past credit rating is practically usually deemed, together with existing revenue as well as assets. The objective of the credit can be a good issue-a established investment chance could have more appeal when compared with a good misdirected concept for any new restaurant. One essential consideration could be the profits in order to financial debt percentage through the customer. May the client have the ability to pay for the loan back again along with interest? Selby's Food Corner: Pasta de Waraku - Indonesian Feast with a ...

Pasta de Waraku is one of my favorite places for having fusion Japanese pasta and pizza. I was pretty?intrigued? when I received an invitation from Pasta de Waraku to try their?new special menu - Indonesian Feast with a Twist, which they claimed as a unique twist to Japanese dishes with the richness of Indonesian taste that will tantalize the buds.

Together with some other food bloggers and media, we tried the below dishes:

Appetizer

Korokoro Tofu - Rp. 25.000

Deep Fried Seasoned Tofu

Calamari - Rp. 35.000

Fried Squid Rings

Edamame - Rp. 10.000

Soybean Pods

Pizza

Salmon Pizza with Curry Sauce - Rp. 50.000 (medium), Rp. 65.000 (large)

Thin crust Pasta de Waraku pizza topped with baked salmon in curry sauce sprinkled with slice of chili, cucumber and onion. As usual, I enjoyed the thin crispy crust though I wish the topping could taste richer.

Pasta

?Beef Spaghetti with Rendang Sauce - Rp. 58.000

Not your average beef spaghetti, instead of standard bolognese sauce, they use rendang sauce which is famous known for its richness flavors and also with mince beef and quail eggs. Good thing that the rendang was not as spicy as I expected.

Fried Oxtail ala Java - Rp. 65.000

Spaghetti aglio e olio cooked with Wafu sauce, completed with fried oxtail and red bell pepper. Frankly speaking, I was not really keen to see the red chili paste on the top of this spaghetti aglio e olio.

?Traditional Fried rice with Angus beef - Rp. 65.000

The authentic taste of Indonesian traditional fried rice cooked with salted fish and shrimp paste. For the combination with Japanese dishes , use Angus beef in Teriyaki sauce and also completing with egg on top. The Angus beef was nice. The fried rice was tasty but too spicy because of the chili seeds.

Indonesian Grilled Ribs Spaghetti - Rp. 65.000

Spaghetti Aglio Olio cooked with Wafu sauce, completed with grilled ribs and fried white onion. Also served with 2 types of chili paste: red chili and green chili. If you are a chili lover, you will definitely love this dish but for me, after I ate a spoon of it, my lips and?tongue?felt like they were on fire :(

Strawberry Cheesecake Milkshake - Rp. ?28.000

I need milk to cool down of my lips and?tongue.?

Grilled Chicken Spaghetti- Rp. 58.000

Signature?Spaghetti aglio Olio cooked with Wafu sauce, completed with juicy grilled chicken covered chili paste on top.?I didn't try this one because I still felt the burning sensation on my lips and?tongue :(

Dessert

?Baby Hanito - Rp. 32.000
Juicy Fruits (left)

Banana Crumble (middle)

Candyland (right)
The name "Baby Hanito" really represents the size of it. It's a 6 cubes of honey toast with toppings. For the toppings, I still prefer the ones that are put on those?original Hanito?like Hanito Macha Red Bean and Hanito Earthquake.

All prices are subjected to service charge and PB1 tax.

Current currency: 1 USD = Rp. 9.600

At the end of this food tasting, it was hard for me to enjoy the food because I'm not a chili person. There are so many Indonesian food without chili. Why all these pastas and pizza need to have chili? Does food with chili really represent Indonesian food? I understand a lot of people love chili but there are people and also children who can not tolerate it. I guess it would be wise to add other non chili pasta and pizza with Indonesian twist to the menu.
