There?s no point in driving visitors to your landing page if they don?t even bat an eye at what you?ve got to give?
The biggest thing you?ll want to keep in mind when creating your landing pages, is keeping your opt-in form above the fold. In other words, don?t make your visitors scroll to find where to put in their information.
But let?s back up a second?
Before you bring traffic in, what can you offer them as a freebie for signing up?
If you have an existing list in the same market, you may be able to survey (SurveyMonkey.com) them to see what their current needs and are create something based on that.
In that case, you?ll give value to your list AND have something to build a new list.
If you?re starting from scratch, do a little digging within your market.
This can actually be pretty fun, because you?re essentially becoming a marketing detective and staking out different forums, question sites, related blogs, etc. to find what you can create.
This can actually be BETTER than a survey, because the info you gather will be raw and unbiased (sometimes people will just give you the answers they think you want to hear or not truly know what they need).
Once you?ve got the info together and written, compile it as a PDF and you?ve got yourself a lead magnet.
Some other tips?
Break the info up and position it as a multi-day e-course. This increases the perceived value, AND instead of just one e-mail sending them a PDF?you get to have a reason to keep in touch over several days.
(Plus, they?ll be much more likely to read it all if it?s broken down into bite-sized bits of info?)
By doing this, you get to send content every day, build a relationship with your new list, and also condition readers to expect (and open) daily e-mails.
If you?re not much of a writer, find someone that?s an expert in your market to interview, and simply offer the audio as the giveaway.
(Hint: Get the audio transcribed and you now have another PDF ? two pieces of content!)
