5 things to watch for in the campaign homestretch

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Five things to watch for in the final week of the presidential race between President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney:

1. STRANGE BEDFELLOWS: It's sort of an odd sight. A week before Election Day, Obama and one of Romney's top surrogates ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ? appear together to check out storm damage. Christie, who considered running for president this year, has praised Obama's handling of superstorm Sandy.

2. ROMNEY BACK ON THE TRAIL: Romney plunges back into full-time campaigning after a pause during the storm. He has a full slate of events in Florida. Will he rip into Obama with gusto? Or, mindful of the storm victims, will Romney tone down his criticism? Does he go to Pennsylvania or Minnesota?

3. OBAMA'S SCHEDULE: The president scrapped three full days of campaigning to focus on his presidential duties, betting that tending to his chief executive responsibilities was the smarter political move than traipsing around battleground states in search of votes. How soon will he get back on the road?

4. GOING NICE? Some independent groups that have spent months pounding on the presidential candidates are turning to positive themes in the campaign's final days. Crossroads GPS has spent a chunk of its $19 million expenditure on the race pummeling Obama. Now new ads sing Romney's praises. Who else goes positive?

5. EARLY VOTING: Early and absentee voting was affected in some states hard hit by the superstorm. Early voting traditionally has been strength for Democrats, so any lost days of early balloting could hurt Obama more than Romney. How quickly does it get back on track?

Cameron rocked by defeat in Europe budget vote

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron suffered a humiliating defeat in parliament on Wednesday after Conservatives rebelled over Europe, an issue that has divided his party for decades and helped bring down previous leaders.

Although the result carried no legal weight, the setback raised questions about Cameron's authority after months of missteps by his coalition government and it revived painful memories of Conservative infighting over Europe.

Cameron wants the European Union's long-term budget to rise only in line with inflation, while opponents said it should be cut in real terms to reflect the bleak economic landscape at home and across Europe.

The rebels won the vote by 307 to 294 votes, a majority of 13, after they received support from the Labour Party, a generally pro-European group accused by Cameron of "rank opportunism".

"This is a time for Brussels to listen to the British people and do what we are all doing, and that is cutting our cloth," Conservative lawmaker Mark Pritchard, one of the revolt's leaders, told Sky News.

Rebels said the vote - Cameron's first significant defeat in parliament since taking power in 2010 - could strengthen his position at budget talks in Brussels next month because he will be able to say his hands are tied by the British parliament.

Other Conservatives said it would weaken his position.

Many Britons regard the EU as an incompetent and spendthrift bureaucracy. Britain's ties with the 27-member bloc are likely to be a big theme in a national election due in 2015.

Cameron wants Britain to remain an EU member but to renegotiate its role within the bloc, focusing more on trade links and less on areas like regulation.

VETO THREAT

Addressing parliament before the vote, Cameron said he was prepared to use his veto to block an EU budget deal if he thought it was bad for Britain. France also threatened on Wednesday to use its veto if the proposals imply farm spending cuts.

"This government is taking the toughest line in these budget negotiations of any government since we joined the European Union," Cameron said before the vote.

"At best we would like it cut, at worst frozen, and I'm quite prepared to use the veto if we don't get a deal that's good for Britain."

Accused of siding with the rebels to score cheap points against Cameron, Labour said it was right to ask Europe to cut its budget in real terms at a time of economic hardship.

"This is a humiliating defeat for David Cameron which shows how weak and out of touch he has become," said Labour finance spokesman Ed Balls.

In a bad-tempered clash in parliament, Labour leader Ed Miliband compared Cameron to John Major, the former Conservative prime minister whose time in office in the 1990s was dogged by infighting over Europe.

Bitter arguments over Britain's role in Europe were central to the downfall of another former leader, Margaret Thatcher.

Trailing in popularity polls, Cameron faces an uncomfortable balancing act on Europe. He does not want to alienate a majority of voters - and a powerful Conservative minority - who might vote to leave the EU after nearly 40 years.

The Conservative leader must also see off a threat from the fiercely anti-EU UK Independence Party, which polls suggest has around 10 percent of the vote, about the same as the pro-Europe Lib Dems, the junior coalition partner.

However, Cameron must also keep the Lib Dems on side and avoid wrecking relations with the EU, Britain's biggest trading partner, as the country emerges from recession.

At Apple, two high-profile executive departures

Apple announced this week that Scott Forstall, the VP in charge of iOS software, is leaving the company -- reportedly in connection with the rocky launch of Apple Maps. It also announced the unrelated departure of retail chief John Browett. Is Apple floundering a bit, or just streamlining?

By Jeff Ward-Bailey,?Contributor / October 31, 2012

Apple announced Monday that Scott Forstall, the senior VP in charge of iOS software, will be leaving the company next year. Retail head John Browett is also departing. Here, Forstall discusses the iPhone at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, California on June 6, 2011.

Monday was a tough day to be an Apple executive. The company announced that Scott Forstall, the head of the iPhone and iPad software and a 15-year veteran of the company, will leave next year. And John Browett, the company's senior VP of retail, is also leaving -- though the two departures reportedly aren't related.

Apple hasn't officially commented on why Forstall is leaving, noting only that many of his responsibilities will be distributed to several other execs including Jony Ive, the company's chief industrial designer. But The Wall Street Journal reports that Forstall's departure is probably connected to the recent bumpy launch of Apple Maps.

After Apple replaced Google Maps with its own service in iOS 6 software, many users complained that the new maps weren't very accurate and that parts of the interface didn't work well. The concerns surrounding the launch led Apple to do something it almost never does: apologize. Chief Executive Tim Cook even went so far as to suggest that customers use alternative mapping services until Apple Maps improved.

But Forstall, whose team built the Maps service, refused to sign the apology letter, the Journal says. Instead, he thought Apple should address users' concerns without apologizing (think of how the company responded to the iPhone 4's antenna issues, for example). Forstall had apparently clashed with other Apple executives before, and after he declined to put his name to the apology Cook asked him to leave. He'll be an advisor to Cook until he leaves next year, the company said.

One interesting result of Forstall's departure: in addition to giving increased responsibility to Ive and other Apple execs, the company is also creating a new "Technologies" group comprising all of Apple's different wireless and semiconductor teams. This group could help Apple to more seamlessly marry its interface and design to the chips and hardware that make up its devices; the company says the new group will "foster innovation ... at an even higher level," adding, a touch mysteriously, that the semiconductor teams have "ambitious plans for the future."

The reasons for Browett's departure are a little less murky: his tenure as chief of retail hasn't been met with much enthusiasm since he came to Apple earlier this year. Soon after he was hired, Browett instituted a faulty retail formula that led to layoffs and reduced hours among Apple Store employees. The policy reportedly didn't go over well with Browett's fellow execs, and unsurprisingly, it wasn't a big hit with the employees he was managing, either.

To be fair, Browett had big shoes to fill: he was hired to replace Ron Johnson, who served as retail head for more than a decade and came up with the idea for the Apple Store and the Genius Bar. Browett's apparent focus on profits wasn't always well-received by employees who were used to a culture that made simple customer service a priority. Apple says the search for a new retail head is already underway, and that Cook will oversee the Retail group directly in the meantime.

The high-profile departure of both executives is the biggest shakeup at Apple since Cook took the reins in 2011. It's tempting to worry that the company is losing its footing in the post-Steve Jobs era, but relax -- there's ample evidence to suggest Apple is just responding to internal power struggles so it can get back to making new products.

Info Technologies | Certification Intelligence

Info technologies news and technical info pertaining to certification intelligence for exam education is the main purpose of this article. Many men and women do not know the difference in between personal computer education and certification exam instruction. I would like to inform every person what the differences are. Computer training is classroom education with scheduled courses or online instruction about the career field pertaining to details technology. Let me clarify! You may want to turn into a Server Administrator. To begin with you will need to have some education someplace in order to be knowledgeable about the subject and maybe acquire a two or four-year degree or get some online instruction with a qualified instructor. You could just want to take a couple of courses and get a certificate in this field. This would be viewed as computer education.

Info technologies certification intelligence on exam coaching is what you need to have in order to be totally prepared to pass your certification exam. Immediately after personal computer instruction you might have a degree or a certificate but you still do not have a certification that is recognized by Microsoft, CIW and CompTia or any other. If you have personal computer instruction that qualifies you to be a Server Administrator then you will want to get certified in Microsoft, CIW or CISCO. Certification exam coaching concentrates on preparing you to pass your certification exam. An IT Certification exam is unlike any other exam that you have had in college or school. There are two very important items to think about when preparing for a certification exam. They are the appropriate study approach and having relevant material that pertains to the actual exam that is up to date with the present market place.

There are only a handful of places online that provide Certification exam education. Say you want to turn out to be a Computer Technician and you study at a college or receive online training so that you are knowledgeable about that field and obtain a diploma or certificate in that location but you nonetheless are not certified until you take a certification exam. Even following graduation you will require to schedule an IT certification exam with prometric or pearsonvue in order to be certified in the field that you desire.

How several areas do you know exactly where you can get coaching on how to pass your details engineering certification exam. Exam education is not the same as pc education. You will require understanding of how to study for your certification exam and to know the appropriate study methods simply because an IT exam is not the exact same as the exams in school. You will also require to know where to get updated material about your certification exam since if you are studying material that is outdated then you will not pass your certification exam. Certification exam coaching is important if you strategy on passing your certification exam the 1st time so you can keep away from 2nd and 3rd exam fees.

Some people might already be working on the job in the profession that they wish, such as a Server Administrator, Desktop Help Technician or a Computer Repair Technician. They might have had prior training prior to employment but have never acquired a certification. They most likely know their job and are very knowledgeable about their operate and field but need to have a certification simply because their employer needs it. Business Travel Stress, Defined | Gadling.com

Business travel stress is caused by a number of reasons. Just being out of the office can make communication and keeping up with ongoing projects a challenge. Some travelers cope well with the challenges of working on the road. Others, not so much. A recent survey by Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) polled more than 6,000 frequent business travelers from nine global corporations, and found that stress tends to fall into three categories.

Time lost when a traveler might be working but instead has to stand in a security line can add stress. Thinking "If I was in the office right now, I could be doing something productive" adds more stress.

Surprises caused by an unscheduled event that disrupts travel is another. Major storms with a cascading effect on airports not even in the affected area commonly add "Will I make my connection?" stress.

Routine breakers that cause an inability to stick to regularly scheduled home activities count too. Activities that are easy to do at home like exercising, watching television or surfing the web add stress when not done on the road.

The biggest stress factor of all? Lost Luggage.

"Losing one's baggage requires replacing the lost content, often in a short space of time. This presents multiple uncertainties under tight deadlines, which produced considerable stress," Carlson Wagonlit Travel (CWT) said in an Executive Travel article.

Coming in at number two on the list of 33 possible stress triggers was being without an Internet connection, or having an unreliable one. Third place was having to fly in coach on a medium or long-haul trip, followed by flight delays, inconvenient arrival or departure times, having to stay in a low-category hotel, inconvenient hotel locations, and last-minute travel.

Canada Earthquake: 5.8 Magnitude Quake Hits British Columbia, Tsunami Warning For Alaska

VANCOUVER, British Columbia ? A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada, but there were no reports of major damage. Residents in parts of British Columbia were evacuated, but the province appeared to escape the biggest quake in Canada since 1949 largely unscathed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the powerful temblor hit the Queen Charlotte Islands just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday at a depth of about 3 miles (5 kilometers) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia. It was felt across a wide area in British Columbia, both on its Pacific islands and on the mainland.

"It looks like the damage and the risk are at a very low level," said Shirley Bond, British Columbia's minister responsible for emergency management said. "We're certainly grateful."

The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of British Columbia, southern Alaska and Hawaii, but later canceled it for the first two and downgraded it to an advisory for Hawaii.

Gerard Fryer, a senior geologist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said the first waves hitting shore in Hawaii are smaller than expected.

The weather service also canceled a tsunami advisory for Oregon, leaving northern California as the only spot in North America still under a tsunami advisory.

Dennis Sinnott of the Canadian Institute of Ocean Science said a 69-centimeter (27 inch) wave was recorded off Langara Island on the northeast tip of Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands. The islands are home to about 5,000 people, many of them members of the Haida aboriginal group. Another 55 centimeter (21 inch) wave hit Winter Harbour on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island.

"It appears to be settling down," he said. "It does not mean we won't get another small wave coming through."

Canada's largest earthquake since 1700 was an 8.1 magnitude quake on August 22, 1949 off the coast of British Columbia, according to the Canadian government's Natural Resources website. It occurred on the Queen Charlotte Fault in what the department called Canada's equivalent of the San Andreas Fault ? the boundary between the Pacific and North American plates that runs underwater along the west coast of the Haida Gwaii.

In 1970 a 7.4 magnitude quake struck south of the Haida Gwaii.

The USGS said the temblor shook the waters around British Columbia and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock after several minutes. Several other aftershocks were reported.

The quake struck 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Sandspit, British Columbia, on the Haida Gwaii archipelago. People in coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground.

Urs Thomas, operator of the Golden Spruce hotel in Port Clements said there was no warning before everything began moving inside and outside the hotel. He said it lasted about three minutes.

"It was a pretty good shock," Thomas, 59, said. "I looked at my boat outside. It was rocking. Everything was moving. My truck was moving."

After the initial jolt, Thomas began to check the hotel.

"The fixtures and everything were still swinging," he said. "I had some picture frames coming down."

Lenore Lawrence, a resident of Queen Charlotte City on the Haida Gwaii, said the quake was "definitely scary," adding she wondered if "this could be the big one." She said the shaking lasted more than a minute. While several things fell off her mantle and broke, she said damage in her home was minimal.

Many on the B.C. mainland said the same.

"I was sitting at my desk on my computer and everything just started to move. It was maybe 20 seconds," said Joan Girbav, manager of Pacific Inn in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. "It's very scary. I've lived here all my life and I've never felt that."

Residents rushed out of their homes in Tofino, British Columbia on Vancouver Island when the tsunami sirens sounded, but they were allowed to return about two hours after the quake.

On Ohio Bus Tour, Ryan Tells Voters 'As Ohio Goes, So Goes America'

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio - At Paul Ryan's fourth stop on a two-day 400 mile bus tour criss-crossing this state, the GOP vice presidential candidate tried to connect with the crowd of more than 1,000 at a dairy here by comparing his native Wisconsin to the Buckeye state on a cold and dreary Saturday.

"In our part of the country we are proud, we make things, we grow things, and we sell things and we create jobs and make good livings for ourselves," Ryan said at Young's Jersey Dairy in brief remarks that clocked in at just over 10 minutes, where he said in his beloved home state they buy "cheese curds" at places like the dairy, which also had batting cages and other activities.

Ryan noted that Election Day is a mere "10 days away," and told the voters in this critical state "we can do this, these solutions are right there."

Throughout his two and a half months as a national candidate, the House Budget Chairman has consistently tried to bond with his audience whether it be through their shared love of hunting as it was last Saturday in Belmont, Ohio or today appealing to the football fans in the crowd.

"We are asking for your support," Ryan said, before referring to the Ohio Wisconsin college football face off in November. "We are in this together. Look, Badger fans and Buckeye fans can do this together ? I am just glad the game is not until after the election."

Ryan then got serious, telling the Ohioans that they "understand" that they are "in the epicenter of this thing."

"You understand that you have a responsibility and an opportunity because your decision and the decision of your friends and your family members and your neighbors may very well determine the direction of this country," Ryan said.

The two-day tour which drove through Ohio's small towns and farmland Saturday, was originally supposed to be solo, but will now be with Mitt Romney on Sunday due to forced schedule changes because of Hurricane Sandy.

The trip around the state hits some of the most swingiest counties in Ohio, but one thing Ryan hasn't been reminding those gathered is to vote early. Early voting in this state started on October 2nd and Ryan made sure to point it out when he was stumping in the state last weekend.

As of the latest report from the Ohio Secretary of State, 1.4 million absentee ballots have been requested so far in the state and just under 620,000 of those ballots have been mailed back. Another 150,000 plus have been cast in person.

The Wisconsin congressman is joined on the bus tour with his wife, Janna and their three young children. The third stop Saturday was at bakery where the kids got some treats and his ten year old daughter, Liza teased her famously health-conscious father.

Ryan jokingly asked the owner of Lindsey's Bakery in Circleville, Ohio, if the delicacies were "sugar free." Liza then piped in: "He's sugar free, except for donuts and ice cream."

Ryan added: "And apple fritters." At his second stop at a high school in Zanesville, he warned the crowd just ten days from Election Day what has been the reality for every Republican who tried to get to the White House:

"As Ohio goes, so goes America. I think you know that," Ryan said.

Recent polls have Obama ahead here, but still show a major tightening since before the presidential debates. A CNN/ORC poll released last week shows the president with 50 percent and Romney with 46 percent. The latest ABC News/Washington Post national tracking poll released Friday has the race at a dead heat with Romney at 49 percent and Obama at 48 percent. Ryan has one more stop Saturday at a high school in Sabina, Ohio, before joining up with Romney for three stops Sunday.

ASUS unveils RTN12HP WiFi router with extralong antennas compensating for much

If getting long-range WiFi is a perpetual battle, ASUS just started a nuclear war. Its fresh RT-N12HP router carries a pair of (thankfully removable) high-gain, 9dBi antennas and a separate signal amplifier that can jointly boost the range of the router's 802.11n wireless up to 300 percent versus challengers that reach the same 300Mbps peak speed. Beyond that, the hotspot mostly claims sheer flexibility as its virtue with support for as many as four separate WiFi networks and a fast toggle between pure router, access point and repeater modes. Once ASUS confirms that we can grab the N12HP in specific countries, it'll likely deliver a good signal from corner to corner in most any home -- and invite some Freudian interpretations.

Best Laid Plans: Life Vs Home Improvement - Blogs | Babble

Life Vs Home Improvement Best Laid Plans: Life Vs Home ImprovementWe have been planning for over a month now to redo the stairs. I?ve searched for ideas, bought the supplies, and scheduled no less than 3 work days. It seemed like a fairly simple process ? pull up the carpet, paint the stairs, choose a decorating scheme.

Then, life happened.

At first, we had trouble finding a free weekend. There was volleyball, soccer, Girl Scouts, and school activities. Once we made it through the sports? seasons, we had a little more time on our hands. I thought for sure we?d be able to tackle the project in just a few hours. Yeah, I?m hilarious.

On our first planned work weekend, the tween was diagnosed with scarlet fever (no, seriously) so the weekend was spent hauling her to the doctor, then the urgent care center, and then to the pharmacy. We spent the rest of the weekend nursing her back to health and keeping the children separated.

I can?t even remember what happened the next weekend, but I know the work day disappeared before I even knew it. Finally, I just started ripping out the carpet. I thought I could at least see what it would take to make it happen. The next thing I knew, I had ripped all the carpet out and was pretty much locked into the project.

The Unfinished Stairs 224x300 Best Laid Plans: Life Vs Home ImprovementI removed nails, pulled up carpet tack, and scraped old drywall mud. When the hubby arrived home and saw what I was doing, he didn?t even roll his eyes before pitching in and finishing the job. The stairs are clear ? and I already love it so much more than the old, ratty carpet.

That was when I realized the stairs needed a little trim work before they could be finished. There were a few gaps here and there, due to the builders not taking the time to finish them properly. After all, they probably never imagined an insane woman ripping out the carpet one random Saturday night.

By that point, Home Depot was closed so our project was on hold. And Sunday was already booked. The rest of the week was fall break, with family fun activities and kids underfoot all day. Today was supposed to be another work day, but I hadn?t considered the evening?s plans with this idea. The girls are having friends spend the night, which makes dealing with wet paint a little difficult.

Okay, so tomorrow, right? Except by the time all our visitors are home, we still have the problem of finishing the job and getting the paint dried before the girls need to go up stairs for bed. And, this is a problem every weekend ? the girls are around, the pets are in the way. How do we paint stairs in a busy house?

I think we?ll have to get started early one morning, right after the girls are at school. Even if the stairs are not dried before they get home, at least we?ll have a few more hours to bedtime. Now, who wants to keep 2 cats and a dog while we paint?

A big thanks to The Home Depot for sponsoring this campaign. Click here to see more of the discussion.

When little toes mean big problems

Most people who don?t have hammertoes cannot comprehend how debilitating it is.

This painful condition can drastically change the shape of your foot, causing excruciating pain, often worsened by shoewear. It makes walking, jogging, or simply standing very difficult.

While there are non-surgical treatments, such as splints and padding, in the early stages of the condition, the toe eventually becomes so painful and rigid that the only option is to surgically correct the toe.

If you have reached this point, it may be time to discuss a new treatment with your doctor: the MiToe? solution.

#
#

What is MiToe??

The MiToe? solution provides a ?mini-implant? that permanently corrects hammertoe, all without external wires.

Depending on your doctor?s advice, you could be back to many of your usual daily activities within a few weeks!

Loneliness Ups Health Risks for Seniors | Psych Central News

Loneliness Ups Health Risks for SeniorsAdopting a positive attitude later in life offers a prescription for staying healthy during one?s golden years, according to a new study.

New research from Carsten Wrosch, Ph.D., a professor in Concordia University?s Department of Psychology, shows that older adults who approach life with a positive outlook can reverse the negative health issues associated with a lonely life.

?Our aim was to see whether using self-protective strategies ? such as thinking positively and avoiding self-blame in the context of common age-related threats ? could prevent lonely older adults from exhibiting increases in stress hormones and inflammatory biomarkers,? said Wrosch.

To test this, the research team followed 122 senior citizens over a six-year period. They measured self-protective strategies with a questionnaire where participants were asked to rate statements such as, ?Even if my health is in very difficult condition, I can find something positive in life,? or ?When I find it impossible to overcome a health problem, I try not to blame myself.?

The research team also asked the participants to what extent they felt lonely or isolated during a typical day.

The researchers also used saliva and blood samples to measure how much cortisol and C-reactive protein (CRP) the participants produced.

These two biological markers were chosen because cortisol is responsible for stress-related changes in the body. People with elevated CRP, on the other hand, are at increased risk of inflammatory illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Their findings showed that positive thinking helped protect against an increase in cortisol secretion. Four years down the road, additional tests showed the participants? CRP levels had improved.

The researchers report that for those older adults who did not report feelings of loneliness, this type of thinking had no effect, supposedly because their social networks may help them deal with age-related problems.

Overall, these findings could contribute to successful aging, according to Wrosch.

?It?s my hope that our research may improve clinical treatment of lonely older adults,? he said.

?Older adults can be taught through counseling or therapy to engage in self-protective thoughts like staying positive when it comes to their own health. That means a better quality of life, both physically and mentally ? something we all want at any age.?

The study is set to be published in Psychosomatic Medicine.

FILE - In this Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 file photo, Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney arrives to make comments on the killing of U.S. embassy officials in Benghazi, Libya, during an appearance in Jacksonville, Fla. (AP) ? Here is a timeline of comments by the administration and Libyan officials on what they believed happened in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, beginning the night of the assault and continuing through September.

Republicans have criticized the administration for its description of the attack, suggesting they insisted it was a protest over a film that insulted the Prophet Muhammad because acknowledging it was a terror attack would have affected the presidential campaign. The administration says it gave out the information it had, as it became available, and has strongly objected to the accusation that its messaging was politically motivated.

Sept. 11, 2012:

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, in a statement on the attack on Benghazi, notes that "some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet."

Sept. 12:

From the Rose Garden, President Barack Obama calls Benghazi an "outrageous and shocking attack." He says the U.S. rejects efforts to denigrate religious beliefs of others, but that there is no justification "to this type of senseless violence." He adds that "no acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation..."

Later, at a campaign event in Las Vegas, Obama sends a message to "anybody who would do us harm: No act of terror will dim the light of the values that we proudly shine on the rest of the world, and no act of violence will shake the resolve of the United States of America."

Clinton, in a statement, condemns what she calls a "vicious and violent attack." She says later, "This was an attack by a small and savage group ? not the people or Government of Libya." She says that "as long as there are those who would take innocent life in the name of God, the world will never know a true and lasting peace."

Sept. 13:

At a campaign event in Colorado, Obama again says, "To all those who would do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished."

In Washington, Clinton addresses the "video circulating on the Internet that has led to these protests in a number of countries." She later returns to the "small and savage group in Benghazi" and says again "some seek to justify this behavior as a response to inflammatory, despicable material posted on the Internet."

In Libya, Wanis el-Sharef, then eastern Libya's deputy interior minister, said the attacks were suspected to have been timed to mark the 9/11 anniversary and that the militants used civilians protesting an anti-Islam film as cover for their action. Infiltrators within the security forces may have tipped off militants to the safe house location, he said.

Sept. 14:

At the repatriation ceremony for the victims of the attacks, Clinton calls Benghazi a "heavy assault" and adds: "We've seen rage and violence directed at American embassies over an awful internet video that we had nothing to do with."

Sept. 15:

In his weekly address, Obama stresses that the U.S. "has a profound respect for people of all faiths" and rejects the denigration of Islam. "Yet there is never any justification for violence," he says. "There is no excuse for attacks on our embassies and consulates."

Sept. 16:

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Susan Rice, goes on morning shows at NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and CNN. Based on the administration's best information, she says, the Benghazi attack was a "spontaneous ? not a premeditated ? response" to the anti-video protests in Cairo. A small number of protesters came to the consulate "and then as that unfolded, it seems to have been hijacked, let us say, by some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons," she said. Rice called the attack a "direct result of a heinous and offensive video that was widely disseminated, that the U.S. government had nothing to do with." She said the U.S. had no information at the time "that leads us to conclude that this was premeditated or preplanned."

In Libya, interim President Mohammed el-Megarif said: "It was planned, definitely. It was planned by foreigners, by people who entered the country a few months ago. And they were planning this criminal act since their arrival."

Sept. 18:

Clinton says U.S. and Libya are working closely together to bring to justice those who "murdered" the four Americas in Benghazi. She notes that in a number of places where protests have turned violent, "we are seeing the hand of extremists who are trying to exploit people's inflamed passions for their own agendas." She cites Clapper's assessment that the U.S. had no actionable intelligence that an attack in Benghazi was planned or imminent.

Sept. 19:

Matthew Olsen, the national counterterrorism center director, tells the Senate committee on homeland security and government affairs that the Benghazi events were a "terrorist attack."

Sept. 20:

At a town hall event in Miami, Obama says what we've seen over the last week-and-a-half "is an offensive video or cartoon directed at the prophet Muhammad. And this is obviously something that then is used as an excuse by some to carry out inexcusable violent acts directed at Westerners or Americans." He says the U.S. is investigating, and that the circumstances differ in each country. But, he adds, "What we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the video were used as an excuse by extremists to see if they can also directly harm U.S. interests."

Sept. 21:

Clinton calls Benghazi a "terrorist attack."

Sept. 26:

At a U.N. event focusing on Africa's Sahel region, Clinton says al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and other groups "have launched attacks and kidnappings from northern Mali into neighboring countries." She says terrorists are "working with other violent extremists to undermine the democratic transitions underway in North Africa, as we tragically saw in Benghazi."

Oct. 26:

Obama administration officials defend their response to the attack amid new claims that the White House failed to send help quickly enough as militants overran the mission.

In response to a report alleging that security officers working for the CIA in Benghazi heard the attack but were twice told to wait before rushing to the compound, CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Youngblood says the CIA "reacted quickly to aid our colleagues during that terrible evening in Benghazi."

Study demonstrates impact of adversity on early life development

Friday, October 26, 2012

It is time to put the nature versus nurture debate to rest and embrace growing evidence that it is the interaction between biology and environment in early life that influences human development, according to a series of studies recently published in a special edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

"Biologists used to think that our differences are pre-programmed in our genes, while psychologists argued that babies are born with a blank slate and their experience writes on it to shape them into the adults they become. Instead, the important question to be asking is, 'How is our experience in early life getting embedded in our biology?'" says University of Toronto behavioural geneticist Marla Sokolowski. She is co-editor of the PNAS special edition titled "Biological Embedding of Early Social Adversity: From Fruit Flies to Kindergarteners" along with professors Tom Boyce (University of British Columbia) and Gene Robinson (University of Illinois).

Sokolowski, who is a University Professor in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology (EEB), the inaugural academic director of Uof T's Fraser Mustard Institute for Human Development and co-director of the Experience-based Brain and Biological Development Program (EBBD) at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) says that relatively little is known about the gene-environment interplay that underlies the impact of early life adversity on adult health and behaviour.

In one of the studies in the series, Sokolowski and her colleagues found that chronic food deprivation and lack of adequate nutrition in the early life of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster had significant impact on adult behaviour and quality of life. Fruit flies are especially useful for genetic studies because they share a surprising number of qualities with humans, are inexpensive to care for and reproduce rapidly, allowing for several generations to be studied in just a few months.

The researchers examined two types of fruit flies with variants in the foraging gene (for) known as rovers and sitters because of their different behaviours in the presence of food.

When well fed as larvae, rover adults exhibit darting exploration into open areas as they move about in search of food, while sitters show little of this behaviour. When nutritionally deprived as larvae, both rover and sitter adults exhibit darting exploration. Further, the sitters that faced nutritional adversity in early life displayed a reduction in their ability to reproduce. Rovers exhibited no effect on their reproductive fitness.

"The foraging gene makes an enzyme called PKG, which is found in the fly as well as in most other organisms, including humans. When faced with a nutritionally adverse environment while growing up, the levels of the enzyme dropped in flies," says Sokolowski. "This told us that the foraging gene listens to its environment." Transgenic manipulations of PKG levels altered darting exploration in well fed but not nutritionally deprived flies.

The research team included James Burns, a CIFAR junior fellow in Sokolowski's lab, U of T EEB professor Locke Rowe and EEB post-doctoral fellow Nicolas Svetec, as well as colleagues from the Universitiy of British Columbia and the Universit? Paris-Sud. The findings are reported in the paper "Chronic food deprivation in early life affects adult exploratory and fitness traits, in the October 16, 2012 issue of the Proceedings of the Nataional Academy of Science.

The papers in the volume are authored largely by CIFAR researchers, and comprise a multidisciplinary collection of research into fields from molecular genetics, evolutionary biology and neuroscience, to social and behavioural science, epidemiology and social policy ? as well as the emerging field of epigenetics, which investigates deviations in a gene's ability to produce its products (e.g. RNA, protein) caused by mechanisms other than changes in an organism's underlying DNA sequence.

The collection of papers in the volume sets out an emerging new field of the developmental science of childhood adversity, and changes conventional understanding of the early years of human life.

"This is the first volume of collected research to provide a substantial and comprehensive picture of the interaction between experience and biology in the early years," says Sokolowski.

"Developmental neuroscience is extraordinarily intricate and complex, and so by approaching this question from multiple angles we're able to reveal a convergence on a number of themes and set a clearer direction for future research."

Tigers shut out again after Cabrera's costly popup

By NOAH TRISTER

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:08 p.m. ET Oct. 27, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera had his chance with the bases loaded. Instead, he ended up standing alone near third base with his hands on his hips.

Another frustrating moment for the Tigers in a World Series filled with them.

Detroit's Triple Crown winner left the bases loaded in the fifth with a harmless popup, wasting Detroit's best chance to break through against Ryan Vogelsong in Game 3 of the Series on Saturday night. The Tigers ended up losing 2-0 to the San Francisco Giants - their second straight game without a run.

Detroit trails the best-of-seven series 3-0 after becoming the first team since 1966 to be shut out in back-to-back World Series games, according to STATS LLC. Baltimore blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers three times in a row that year.

The Tigers hadn't been shut out twice in a row since 2008, and not in a single postseason since Games 4 and 5 of the 1908 World Series against the Chicago Cubs, according to STATS.

The Tigers had their opportunities. They had a runner on base in seven of the first eight innings, but they hit into double plays to end the first and third.

Cabrera had a chance to put all those frustrations to rest. Down 2-0, Detroit loaded the bases in the fifth on singles by Alex Avila and Omar Infante and a walk by Austin Jackson. Quintin Berry struck out, but Cabrera was waiting to hit next.

With the crowd chanting "MVP!" and the Comerica Park fans desperate for something to happen, Cabrera slapped a line drive down the right-field line, and for an instant, it looked as if he had tied the game or perhaps given the Tigers the lead.

The ball landed a few feet foul. He then popped out to the shortstop.

Detroit left nine men on base in the game.

Returning home after two losses in San Francisco, the Tigers had a chance to strike early when Berry walked and Cabrera singled with one out in the first. But Prince Fielder grounded into a double play to wipe out that threat.

The Giants made Detroit pay immediately, scoring their only two runs in the top of the second.

Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez walked Hunter Pence to start the inning. Before that, Sanchez had faced 95 consecutive right-handed batters without a walk, according to STATS.

This free pass proved costly. After a stolen base and a wild pitch, Pence was on third, and he scored on Gregor Blanco's triple. Brandon Crawford's RBI single made it 2-0.

The Tigers grounded into 156 double plays in the regular season, the most in baseball. Berry hit into one in the third Saturday after Infante and Jackson singled.

Detroit made it to the World Series by sweeping the Yankees when New York was in the middle of an awful hitting slump. Now it's the Tigers who haven't been able to score - and they're a loss away from their own four-game exit.

While Detroit never trailed during the ALCS, the Tigers have not led in the World Series.

First Person: During Breast Cancer Treatment, Lucky to Have My Husband by My Side

To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Yahoo News asked women who have had breast cancer or are going through treatment to write about the people in their lives who stood by them and cared for them. Here's one story.

FIRST PERSON | It's been two decades since my breast cancer diagnosis. Through it all, my husband was my companion: during my surgery, treatments and after.

Today, we're both 86, and living in Los Angeles. We've known each other for 45 years after we met on a blind date and fell in love the first day we met.

When I discovered I had breast cancer in my 60s, I considered myself lucky. Why? Because I discovered it when it was in the very first stage. I knew it was in the first stage because when I went in for my annual mammogram, there were no signs of cancer.

Two months later, I felt a small lump in my left breast, which I had never felt before. To make certain that my imagination wasn't getting the best of me, I asked my husband to feel my breast. When he told me that he did feel a lump, I became upset. He re-assured me that it was probably nothing to worry about. It made me feel a little better.

Although I went for my second mammogram only two months after the first one, I was disturbed when the nurse reported to me that I had cancer in the left breast. I made an appointment for surgery. My husband was a great companion. As he drove me to the hospital, he was very re-assuring that everything will be alright. This made me feel so much better.

Since my cancer was in the very early stage, I did not need chemotherapy, but I had to go for radiation therapy three times a week for six weeks.

Being a social person, I found my radiation sessions rather pleasant and relaxing. Why? Because while waiting in the waiting room for my treatments, there were other people waiting for their treatments also. When you sit in a room three times a week for six weeks, with basically the same people, you're bound to become friendly with some of the people.

One young man had brain cancer. Apparently, his wife left him because she couldn't take it. When I heard this, I felt so that my husband was definitely not like this man's wife.

Even though the pain from the operation was not too severe, he insisted on making dinner for the next three days after he brought me home from the hospital. Not only did he make the dinner, but when I told him that I would clean up, he insisted: "No, no. You go watch television. "

After he cleaned up, he held my hand, and whispered in my ear, "You're my only."
