Warwick Professor states government cuts and policy changes have marginalised Religious Education

Professor Jackson, from the University of Warwick?s Religions and Education Research Unit, outlined the impact of government policy at the ?Religion in Education: Findings from the Religion and Society Programme? event being held at the University.

He stated the Academies Act 2010 allowed schools to leave local authority control with no requirement to teach religious education.

Professor Jackson also said that Religious Education had not been included as a ?recognised? humanities subject in the recently launched English Baccalaureate (EBacc). The EBacc measures the proportion of pupils who have good GCSE passes in English, Maths, Sciences, Humanities and a modern foreign language. According to a survey in May 2011 by the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education (NATRE), over 50% of schools with fallen GCSE entry levels for Religious Education blamed the impact of the new EBacc.?

Professor Jackson added: ?The NATRE survey revealed legal provision for religious education is not being met at key stage 4 in around 25% of schools. Also around 30% of schools reported reductions in 2011-12 in specialist religious education staff.?

?The research reported at this conference, together with the policy recommendations of the Foreign Ministers of the Council of Europe, show the need for investment in religious education by consolidating its place in all types of school and by resourcing the initial and in-service training of teachers. Through the years, Kathleen has been one of the industry?s most successful and prolific designers, with her designs featured on the covers of dozens of magazines. Paper crafts, mosaics, home d?cor, garden art, children?s crafts ? you name it, Kathleen has designed for all categories. I?ve thrown a lot of crazy ideas at Kathleen, and somehow, she always makes it work.

Kathleen was ahead of the times when she made this chicken from plastic shopping bags almost 10 years ago.

While Kathleen and I have worked together all these years, we?d never met ? until this summer! I was so excited when a family vacation gave me reason to plan a detour to Amherst, MA, to meet Kathleen. I would finally have an opportunity to talk with Kathleen in person, and to see the home, studio and gardens I?d heard her talk about for years.

On the much-anticipated day, Kathleen, in her trademark apron, and her husband Steve greeted us at the door of her restored Victorian home. We entered the gracious and beautifully preserved home and I immediately noticed the parlor ceiling with the wallpaper mosaic I?d heard so much about. It was just one of many of Kathleen?s stories that came to life that afternoon.

After lunch on the porch, we toured Kathleen?s studio and wandered through the gardens, admiring several ponds, waterfalls, and perennial beds. A screened pavilion, perfect for picnics, is tucked?into a corner. The stone terrace behind the home is accented with Kathleen?s pebble mosaics, another project I had only envisioned till that day.

Kathleen built the studio behind her house so that she could conduct craft workshops. Those lucky enough to live in Amherst, MA, experienced her creativity firsthand. Her favorite classes were those for children. ?I learned to let kids take the lead, and motivated them with love and respect.?

Kathleen has empowered millions of children and adults through her art, whether it?s in person or through the printed page. ?I consider myself the facilitator,? explains Kathleen. ?I let my students go wherever their art takes them. The power of creativity is that it takes you wherever you need to go and it makes you whole.?

Kathleen remembers her own childhood as a time filled with ?making things?. After receiving a Masters degree in elementary education, Kathleen taught second and fifth grade for several years, and then launched her design career as she raised her two daughters. (One daughter is now a novelist and playwright, and the other a poet and professional chef.)

?My mother was my biggest supporter, and she carried my work everywhere and would sell it right out of her purse,? says Kathleen. ?One day, she met the craft editor at Woman?s World, and told her all about my work. That?s how I began my career in publishing.?

?I became known as the ?finisher,?? explains Kathleen. ?Editors frequently called me to clean up other peoples? designs ? projects that were left incomplete or not designed as planned.?

Today, Kathleen no longer teaches classes, and is devoted?to volunteering in her community. ?The small things we do for those in our community are a sure way to make a difference,? says Kathleen. ?Many of the strategies I learned in the classroom ? appreciate others, be creative, let people follow their own paths, also work when volunteering,? she explains.

From the beautiful gardens that surround her home, to the art studio behind her house, Kathleen George has spent a lifetime inspiring others. I feel very privileged to have worked with Kathleen for so many years, and to finally have the opportunity to meet her in person. The title says it all, the book funnily enough, is about South Africa and the ?few? bad seeds that messed everything up, but for some reason I think that the author Alex Parker could have made the list a bit longer. This book although extremely humorous and graphical is a great learning tool for old and young, you just need to think of it as a collection of the 50 greatest villains of South African history, from Jan van Riebeeck to Shaka to Cecil John Rhodes to Hendrik Verwoerd to Thabo Mbeki and Julius Malema. These are men mostly, but not exclusively who have steered South Africa firmly in the wrong direction, affecting our history, our national psyche and our way of life.

David Bullard said this about the book ??And are still stuffing up South? could well be the title.?? And I agree because most of the vermin mentioned in the book are still alive till today. To top it all up the illustrations on the book are done by the talented? controversial satirist Zapiro. The guy just can?t help being on the wrong side of the government every year, so if you are looking for a great book to teach you a bit of our history and also humour you at the same time grab Alex Parkers ?50 People Who Stuffed Up South Africa?.

How to make healthy holiday cookies that are delicous and guilt free!

Enjoy yummy desserts this chritmas/holiday season that wont pack on pounds.

Instructions

Thumbprint cookies!

What you will need:

-Raw almonds

-Oats

-Whole wheat flour

-pure maple syrup, grade A or B

-Sunflower oil or canola oil

-Cinamon

-Natural Jam (my favorite is rasberry)

-Blender or food processor

-mixing bowl

-spoon for stiring

Directions:

??? Preheat oven at 350 degrees.? Spray a cookie sheet with oil.? Put 1 cup of almonds into blender and grind to a meal.? Pour the almonds into bowl.? Place 1 cup of oats?into blender grind to a meal.? Place into bowl.? Add 1 1//4 cups of whole wheat?flour(you could use oat flour) and 1/2 teaspoon cinamon into bowl and stir.? Add 1/2 cup maple syrup and 1/2 cup sunflower oil into bowl and stir.?

???? Wet hands and roll into walnut size balls.? Indent in the middle of the balls with your thumb.? Fill the whole with jam.? Bake for 10 to 15 minutes.

Tips:

If you want this recipe gluten free buy gluten free oats, substitute flour with gluten free oat flour. Get the kids involved!

Gingerbread Cake!

What you will need:

-oil

-water, unsweetened soy milk or water

-malt syrup or black molasses

-whole wheat flour

-sea salt

-baking soda

-cinnamon

-nutmeg

-dry ginger

-bowl

-sifter

Directions:

???? Preheat oven to 350 degrees.? Oil a 9 inch square baking pan.? Whip 1/2 cup oil,? 1 1/2 cup liquid(water, soymilk or almond milk) and?2/3 cup barely malt syrup or molasses.? Sift 2 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 tsp. sea salt, 1 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 2 tsp. ginger.? Mix dry ingredients with?wet ingredients.? Poor into baking pan.? Bake for?35 to 40 minutes.?

Frost with light wip cream, frozen yogurt or applesauce!

Chocolate truffles!

What you will need:

-1 cup unsweetened soymilk or almond milk

-18 ounces dairy-free, grain-sweetened chocolate chips

-2 tablespoons agar flakes

-1 tablespoon cocoa powder

-cocoa powder

-roasted nuts or raw (hazelnuts, almonds, walnuts, etc.) finely chopped.

-roated or raw coconut flakes.

Directions:

??? In a saucepan over medium heat bring soymilk and agar flakes to a simmer.? Add chocolate chips and stir until melted.? Remove from heat and transfer to a baking pan.? Allow to cool for 1 hour in the refrigerator.? Using a spoon scoop up about 1-ounce of the chocolate mixture.? Roll into small balls.? Roll the balls into cocoa powder, nuts or coconut flakes.? Store in refrigerator until ready to serve.

Tips & Warnings

-It your not planning to eat the desserts right away you can freeze them.? When ready to eat take them out and let them defrost and you?ll have fresh yummy desserts!
